Cadmium (Cd) is an element with high toxicity to living organisms, and its accumulation in rice grains poses a threat to human health. In this study, we report a novel nickel-transport family protein, OsNTP1, that is involved in Cd transport from root to shoot. Heterologous expression of OsNTP1 in yeast enhanced Ni and Cd tolerance.

Article Synopsis
  • Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are crucial molecular chaperones that help plants respond to environmental stress, with a study identifying 192 Hsp genes spread across all chromosomes, especially concentrated on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, and 5.
  • These Hsp genes are classified into six subfamilies and show different expression patterns: some have high expression in many tissues, some are tissue-specific, and others have generally low expression.
  • Using CRISPR/Cas9 to create knockout mutants, the study found that under high-temperature conditions, mutants had reduced yield and altered rice quality, highlighting the significance of Hsp genes in rice yield and quality formation.

As global climate change intensifies, the occurrence and severity of various abiotic stresses will significantly threaten plant health and productivity. Drought stress (DS) is a formidable obstacle, disrupting normal plant functions through specific morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms. Understanding how plants navigate DS is paramount to mitigating its adverse effects.

Extreme anthropogenic activities and current farming techniques exacerbate the effects of water and soil impurity by hazardous heavy metals (HMs), severely reducing agricultural output and threatening food safety. In the upcoming years, plants that undergo exposure to HM might cause a considerable decline in the development as well as production. Hence, plants have developed sophisticated defensive systems to evade or withstand the harmful consequences of HM.

The escalating challenges posed by metal(loid) toxicity in agricultural ecosystems, exacerbated by rapid climate change and anthropogenic pressures, demand urgent attention. Soil contamination is a critical issue because it significantly impacts crop productivity. The widespread threat of metal(loid) toxicity can jeopardize global food security due to contaminated food supplies and pose environmental risks, contributing to soil and water pollution and thus impacting the whole ecosystem.
