A Conditional Indirect Effects Analysis of Intimate Partner Violence, Depression, Social Support, and Race With Alcohol Consumption among Postpartum Mothers.

Alcohol use and alcohol-related mortality for pregnant and postpartum women have increased, and there are racial disparities in both alcohol consumption and pregnancy outcomes. In addition, data indicate that women of Color are more likely to experience many forms of violence and face more adverse consequences from violence than non-Hispanic White women. Therefore, the current study examined how the direct and indirect pathways between intimate partner violence (IPV), depressive symptoms, and alcohol consumption are moderated by both social support and race among postpartum women.

Major Depression in Postpartum Women during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Can Social Support Buffer Psychosocial Risks and Substance Use?

Rates of mood disorders and substance use increased during the COVID-19 pandemic for postpartum women. The present study's aims were to: (1) examine the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) in postpartum women during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) evaluate whether social support can buffer the associations between MDD, psychosocial factors (perceived stress, generalized anxiety, and intimate partner violence) and substance use (alcohol and drug use). A nationwide survey included 593 postpartum mothers (within 12 months from birth).

Developments in ocular allergy.

Purpose Of Review: The goal of this article is to evaluate developments in the knowledge of inflammatory mechanisms and treatments of ocular allergy.

Recent Findings: Research developments in ocular allergy summarized in this article include the following findings: (1) ocular epithelial cells play a role in inflammation; (2) respiratory syncytial virus is a pathogen in allergic conjunctivitis; (3) transglutaminase inhibitors reverse allergic related inflammation; (4) eosinophils and neutrophils both play a role in ocular allergy; (5) eotaxin-1 and eotaxin-2 play a role in eosinophilic recruitment; and (6) loteprednol etabonate, desonide phosphate, and cyclosporine have been shown to be effective and safe in the treatment of ocular allergy.

Summary: This article summarizes the research conducted for each of the above recent findings and outlines their clinical applications.

Community critical care course: blueprint for success.

For 10 years, a group of 19 California hospitals has supported a community-based critical care educational program for entry-level critical care nurses. Program management is rotated every two years. Two courses are offered quarterly: a 32-hour ECG course and a 96-hour Critical Care Nursing course.

Response of deep nephrons and the terminal collecting duct to a reduction in renal mass.

Juxtamedullary (JM) nephron and collecting duct function was studied after a two-thirds reduction in renal mass in the young rat. The glomerular filtration rate of JM nephrons was twofold greater in the remnant kidney (RK) group than in controls, but this increase was proportional to the increase measured in surface nephrons. Despite an increase in absolute reabsorption, delivery of sodium and water to the end of the proximal tubule of superficial nephrons and to the bend of Henle's loop of JM nephrons was increased.
