Cassini composite infrared spectrometer: correcting an offset error and refining the pointing parameters for the midinfrared detectors.

Based on preflight laboratory testing, an unexpectedly large positional offset between the two midinfrared (mid-IR) detector arrays in the Cassini composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument has been noted in the literature. A much smaller offset was measured in-flight. We investigate this discrepancy by estimating several spatial relationships among the detectors and comparing these results with three independent data sets.

Spectral Characterization of Bennu Analogs Using PASCALE: A New Experimental Set-Up for Simulating the Near-Surface Conditions of Airless Bodies.

We describe the capabilities, radiometric stability, and calibration of a custom vacuum environment chamber capable of simulating the near-surface conditions of airless bodies. Here we demonstrate the collection of spectral measurements of a suite of fine particulate asteroid analogs made using the Planetary Analogue Surface Chamber for Asteroid and Lunar Environments (PASCALE) under conditions like those found on Earth and on airless bodies. The sample suite includes anhydrous and hydrated physical mixtures, and chondritic meteorites (CM, CI, CV, CR, and L5) previously characterized under Earth- and asteroid-like conditions.

SEIS: Insight's Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure of Mars.

Unlabelled: By the end of 2018, 42 years after the landing of the two Viking seismometers on Mars, InSight will deploy onto Mars' surface the SEIS (eismic xperiment for nternal tructure) instrument; a six-axes seismometer equipped with both a long-period three-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) instrument and a three-axes short-period (SP) instrument. These six sensors will cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 Hz to 50 Hz, with possible extension to longer periods.

Chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes) Are More Averse to Social Than Nonsocial Risk.

Social risk is a domain of risk in which the costs, benefits, and uncertainty of an action depend on the behavior of another individual. Humans overvalue the costs of a socially risky decision when compared with that of purely economic risk. Here, we played a trust game with 8 female captive chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes) to determine whether this bias exists in one of our closest living relatives.
