Background: The aim of this study is to systematically review the evidence of the efficacy of adjunctive antibiotic therapy to periodontal therapy in smokers with periodontitis.
Methods: A search was conducted for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with durations ≥6 months that compared periodontal therapy with and without adjunctive antibiotics for the treatment of periodontitis in smokers. Data sources primarily included PubMed with MeSH terms and free text as well as EMBASE, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials.
Objective: Despite high rates of tobacco use, overwhelming evidence of detrimental effects on oral health, smokers" desire to stop using tobacco and the availability of efficacious brief intervention counselling (BIC) strategies, the delivery of cessation services by dental practitioners is, at best, inconsistent. The purpose of this part of our study was to assess BIC practice patterns among dentists and dental hygienists in Manitoba and to determine whether demographic or psychosocial factors influence BIC delivery.
Methods: A pre-piloted survey was mailed to all licensed dentists (547) and registered dental hygienists (566) in the province.
Background: Cigarette smoking is accepted as an important factor that increases the risk for the initiation and progress of chronic periodontitis. However, the effect of cigarette smoking on the recurrence of disease in patients undergoing regular maintenance therapy is less understood. Therefore, we set out to assess disease progression longitudinally in smoking and non-smoking subjects with chronic periodontitis undergoing periodontal maintenance therapy every 3 to 4 months.

Materials And Methods: The study consisted of 130 patients, each of whom received the active or placebo gel in periodontal pockets in one quadrant of the mouth for 30 s prior to periodontal debridement (scaling and root planing). Pain was measured using both a 100-mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and a Verbal Rating Scale (VRS).

This study compared the effectiveness of 2 barrier membranes, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) and collagen, in treating Class II furcation defects of mandibular molars in humans. Seventeen nonsmoking subjects with no history of systemic disease each presenting with Class II furcation defects in 2 mandibular molars were selected and underwent initial therapy. At the time of the surgery and at 8-month follow-up, soft-tissue measurements consisting of the gingival index, vertical and horizontal probing depth, recession and clinical attachment level were obtained at the midfurcation level.
