Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), particularly iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), play a pivotal role in biomedical applications ranging from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement and cancer hyperthermia treatments to biosensing. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and application of IONPs with two different size distributions for frequency mixing magnetic detection (FMMD), a technique that leverages the nonlinear magnetization properties of MNPs for sensitive biosensing. IONPs are synthesized through thermal decomposition and subsequent growth steps.

Interference with protein-protein interfaces represents an attractive as well as challenging option for therapeutic intervention and drug design. The enzyme tRNA-guanine transglycosylase, a target to fight Shigellosis, is only functional as a homodimer. Although we previously produced monomeric variants by site-directed mutagenesis, we only crystallized the functional dimer, simply because upon crystallization the local protein concentration increases and favors formation of the dimer interface, which represents an optimal and highly stable packing of the protein in the solid state.

A nanowire photoanode SrTaON, a semiconductor suitable for overall water-splitting with a band gap of 2.3 eV, was coated with functional overlayers to yield a core-shell structure while maintaining its one-dimensional morphology. The nanowires were grown hydrothermally on tantalum, and the perovskite-related oxynitride structure was obtained by nitridation.

In recent years, high-pressure treatment (HPT) has become an established process concerning the preservation of food. However, studies dealing with the structural, and consequently functional modification of non-hydrated starchy matrices (moisture content ≤ 15%) by HPT are missing. To close this knowledge gap, pressure (0⁻600 MPa, 10 min) and pressurization time depending (0⁻20 min, 450 MPa) alterations of wheat flour were investigated.

LiNiMnO₄ (LNMO) spinel has been extensively investigated as one of the most promising high-voltage cathode candidates for lithium-ion batteries. The electrochemical performance of LNMO, especially its rate performance, seems to be governed by its crystallographic structure, which is strongly influenced by the preparation methods. Conventionally, LNMO materials are prepared via solid-state reactions, which typically lead to microscaled particles with only limited control over the particle size and morphology.
