Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of the 15-item Picker Patient Experience questionnaire (PPE-15) when embedded in a short form instrument as compared with a longer form measure.
Methods: A postal questionnaire survey of patients recently discharged from two hospital trusts was carried out. Patients were randomized to receive the PPE-15 in either a four-page or a 12-page survey instrument.
Objectives: All health care providers in England are required to conduct surveys of their patients' experience of health care. Data from such surveys contribute to the 'star rating' performance indicators. However, there are concerns that these subjective measures may be influenced more by characteristics of patients than by true variations in the quality of care.

A secondary purpose was to determine whether a single summary index figure could be generated from the instrument.
Design: The data reported here comes from the survey of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, which was the second in the programme of National Surveys of National Health Service (NHS) patients.
Objective: To determine what aspects of healthcare provision are most likely to influence satisfaction with care and willingness to recommend hospital services to others and, secondly, to explore the extent to which satisfaction is a meaningful indicator of patient experience of healthcare services.
Design: Postal survey of a sample of patients who underwent a period of inpatient care. Patients were asked to evaluate their overall experience of this episode of care and to complete the Picker Inpatient Survey questionnaire on specific aspects of their care.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a core set of questions to measure patients' experiences of in-patient care. Questions were selected from the bank of items developed for use in in-patient surveys undertaken by the Picker Institute for the purposes of assessing the quality of care.
Design: The data reported here come from surveys of patients who had attended acute care hospitals in five countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
