Age-specific effects of a sustained cognitive activity on perceived cognitive fatigue as well as single- and dual-task treadmill walking performance.

During their daily lives humans are often confronted with sustained cognitive activities (SCA) leading to state fatigue, a psychobiological state characterized by a decrease in cognitive and/or motor performance and/or an increase in perception of fatigue. It was recently shown that performing SCA can impair overground dual-task gait performance in older adults, but it is currently unknown whether there is a task- and/or age-specific modulation in gait performance during treadmill walking. Therefore, the effect of a SCA on single- and dual-task treadmill walking performance was investigated in young and old adults.

A gluteus-specific muscle synergy recruited during the first recovery step following a backward pitch perturbation.

The central nervous system momentarily activates a set of specific muscle synergies to maintain balance when external mechanical perturbations induce walking instability, which is critically involved in preventing falls. The activation patterns and composition of the muscle synergies recruited in the perturbed leg have not been fully characterized, and even less so for the recovery step. Here, we addressed this research gap by measuring the surface electromyographic data of the relevant muscles during a backward-pitched perturbed walk, and then extracting muscle synergy-related parameters using a non-negative matrix factorization algorithm.

Preclinical translational platform of neuroinflammatory disease biology relevant to neurodegenerative disease.

Neuroinflammation is a key driver of neurodegenerative disease, however the tools available to model this disease biology at the systems level are lacking. We describe a translational drug discovery platform based on organotypic culture of murine cortical brain slices that recapitulate disease-relevant neuroinflammatory biology. After an acute injury response, the brain slices assume a chronic neuroinflammatory state marked by transcriptomic profiles indicative of activation of microglia and astrocytes and loss of neuronal function.

Bilateral neuromuscular control in patients one year after unilateral ACL rupture or reconstruction. A cross-sectional study.

Objectives: To compare bilateral neuromuscular control in patients one year after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) or conservative treatment (ACL-C) to healthy controls (ACL-I).

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: Electromyography of vastus medialis (VM) and lateralis (VL), biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) was recorded during stair descent and anterior tibial translation.

Usage of guideline-adherent core treatments for knee osteoarthritis before and after consulting an orthopaedic surgeon: A prospective cohort study.

Objective: To describe 1) the proportion of patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing guideline-adherent core treatments until six months after primary referral to an orthopaedic surgeon, 2) which specific treatment pathways these patients undertake and 3) the characteristics of patients choosing different treatment pathways.

Design: This prospective cohort study consecutively invited patients referred to an orthopaedic surgeon due to knee OA at two Danish hospitals from October 2018 to December 2020. Before and six months after consulting the surgeon, patients answered a questionnaire reporting which treatments they had received for knee OA.
