The nature of western lowland gorilla social relationships within and between groups is largely understudied, partly due to the challenges of monitoring associations between individuals who live in neighboring groups. In this study, we examined the social relationships of four western lowland gorilla groups in the Ndoki landscape of northern Republic of Congo. To do so, we compiled all-occurrence social interaction and silverback nearest neighbor social networks from data collected during daily group follows conducted over several years.

Fission-fusion social systems allow individuals to make flexible choices about where, with whom, and in what contexts to spend their time in response to competing social and ecological pressures. The ability for fission-fusion societies to support individual behavioral strategies that vary across contexts has been suggested, but the potential function of such context-specific social choices remains largely understudied. We adopted the concept of social niche construction to explore possible differences in social complexity at the individual and group level across feeding contexts.

While there is growing recognition of the importance of traditional knowledge in science, these perspectives remain underrepresented in research publications. However, the synthesis of these approaches has tremendous potential to improve our understanding of wildlife and ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a method to quantitate the veterinary sedative xylazine as well as 4-anilino-N-phenethylpiperidine (4-ANPP), acetyl fentanyl, fentanyl, norfentanyl, and p-fluorofentanyl in blood utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. This method also qualitatively monitors for the presence of o-fluorofentanyl and m-fluorofentanyl isomers. UCT Clean Screen® DAU extraction columns were utilized to isolate the analytes in postmortem blood samples.
