A Novel Technique for Inguinal Hernia Repair in Patients With Nonmalignant Ascites.

Introduction: We report a novel approach to open inguinal hernia repair in patients with known ascites in which the cord, hernia sac, and attached testicle on the affected side are repositioned into the retroperitoneum through the inguinal ring. By avoiding invasion of the peritoneum and limiting dissection of the sac off the spermatic cord, the risk of ascites leak and testicular ischemia is theoretically decreased.

Methodology: This is a retrospective case series report.

Assessing the predicted impact of single amino acid substitutions in calmodulin for CAGI6 challenges.

Recent thermodynamic and functional studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of amino acid substitutions on Calmodulin (CaM). The Critical Assessment of Genome Interpretation (CAGI) data provider at University of Verona (Italy) measured the melting temperature (T) and the percentage of unfolding (%unfold) of a set of CaM variants (CaM challenge dataset). Thermodynamic measurements for the equilibrium unfolding of CaM were obtained by monitoring far-UV Circular Dichroism as a function of temperature.

Computer-assisted medical history taking prior to patient consultation in the outpatient care setting: a prospective pilot project.

Background: Feeding patients' self-reported medical history into the diagnostic care process may accelerate workflows in clinical routine.

Methods: We prospectively piloted a novel medical history documentation system in a German cardiological outpatient practice and evaluated its feasibility and perceived usefulness. Based on a generic software that allows to record structured information, a customized solution for the cooperating practice was developed and implemented.

Leveraging Foundational Models in Computational Biology: Validation, Understanding, and Innovation.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown significant promise across a wide array of fields, including biomedical research, but face notable limitations in their current applications. While they offer a new paradigm for data analysis and hypothesis generation, their efficacy in computational biology trails other applications such as natural language processing. This workshop addresses the state of the art in LLMs, discussing their challenges and the potential for future development tailored to computational biology.

Precision medicine focuses on developing treatments and preventative strategies tailored to an individual's genomic profile, lifestyle, and environmental context. The Precision Medicine sessions at the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) have consistently spotlighted progress in this domain. Our 2025 manuscript collection features algorithmic innovations that integrate data across scales and diverse data modalities, presenting novel techniques to derive clinically relevant insights from molecular datasets.
