[Prevalence of undernutrition in 143 patients before liver transplantation. The Lausanne experience between 1997 and 2005].

The prevalence of undernutrition was prospectively studied in 143 patients before liver transplantation between 1997 and 2005. Nutritional assessment is a particularly tricky problem in cirrhosis and mid-arm muscle circumference is considered as the best reliable anthropometric tool. In this prospective study, prevalence rate is very high (61%) and undernutrition is more frequent in alcoholic cirrhotic patients.

[Short bowel syndrome: nutritional guidelines for the adult patient].

The short bowel is defined by the extended resection of the small intestine, leaving a maximum of 100 cm of healthy organ beyond the ligament of Treitz, with or without preservation of the colon. Nutritional management must be quick in order to optimize adaptation of the remaining intestine, therefore avoiding intestinal insufficiency. Consequent nutrition support such as long term enteral or parental nutrition is some times indispensable.

Impact of a computerized information system on quality of nutritional support in the ICU.

Objective: In intensive care units (ICUs), patient outcome depends on quality of nutritional support. We investigated the effect of computerized information systems (CISs) on quality of nutritional support by comparing two ICUs with or without CIS and burned patients before and after CIS implementation.

Methods: Part 1 was a 2-wk prospective survey in two units of a surgical ICU: unit A (11 beds) without CIS and unit B (four beds) with CIS.

Public awareness of stuttering.

The results are reported of a questionnaire study into the awareness of stuttering of lay persons in part of Belgium. 1,362 subjects were interviewed. Questions pertained to various aspects of stuttering including prevalence, onset, gender distribution and occurrence in different cultures, cause, treatment, intelligence and hereditariness.
