Microstructure control in metal additive manufacturing is highly desirable for superior and bespoke mechanical performance. Engineering the columnar-to-equiaxed transition during rapid solidification in the additive manufacturing process is crucial for its technological advancement. Here, we report a powder-size driven melt pool engineering approach, demonstrating facile and large-scale control in the grain morphology by triggering a counterintuitive response of powder size to the additively manufactured 316 L stainless steel microstructure.

The weak mechanical properties of hydrogels due to the inefficient dissipation of energy in the intrinsic structures limit their practical applications. Here, a double-network (DN) hydrogel has been developed by integrating an ionically cross-linked agar network, a covalently cross-linked acrylic acid (AAC) network, and the dynamic and reversible ionically cross-linked coordination between the AAC chains and Fe ions. The proposed model reveals the mechanisms of the improved mechanical performances in the DN agar/AAC-Fe hydrogel.

Boosted by the success of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) manufactured by conventional processes in various applications, the development of HEAs for 3D printing has been advancing rapidly in recent years. 3D printing of HEAs gives rise to a great potential for manufacturing geometrically complex HEA products with desirable performances, thereby inspiring their increased appearance in industrial applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent achievements of 3D printing of HEAs is provided, in the aspects of their powder development, printing processes, microstructures, properties, and potential applications.

Orthopedic implants first started out as an all-metal hip joint replacement. However, poor design and machinability as well as unsatisfactory surface finish subjected the all-metal joint replacement to being superseded by a polyethylene bearing. Continued improvement in manufacturing techniques together with the reality that polyethylene wear debris can cause hazardous reactions in the human body has brought about the revival of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip joints in recent years.
