A new method and a device for enzymatic express assay of beta-lactam antibiotics are described. The principle of the device operation is based on the use of native enzymes specific to the antibiotics assayed. The method makes it possible to exclude the influence of the buffer capacity of the samples on the results of the assay.

The method is based on ion selective electrodes with a film membrane. The results of the theoretical and experimental studies on estimation of the electrode selectivity specific of PAA in the presence of various interfering ions are presented.

The design of a glucose sensitive electrode is based on an oxygen probe and a membrane with immobilized glucose oxidase. Materials for the probe were chosen and the operating conditions for measuring temperature, pH, linear agitation velocity and other parameters were optimized.

Colour of butyl acetate extract (BAE) at the clarification stage in chemical purification of benzylpenicillin is one of the important qualitative parameters necessary for the process control. BAE is benzylpenicillin-enriched butyl acetate with colouring pigments and admixtures of unknown nature. The routine laboratory photocolorimetric method provides only periodical control.

Modified cellulose films are recommended to be used as carriers in preparing enzymatic membranes for penicillin-selective electrodes. The results of laboratory testing of the enzymatic penicillin-selective electrode based on the cellulose membrane with immobilized penicillinase are presented. In principle it was shown possible to use the enzymatic electrode in determining penicillin concentration in solutions.
