Enteric fever is caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi A and B, which can present clinically with variety of symptoms. We report a case of a middle-aged gentleman with salmonella infection who developed reversible corpus callosum splenium infarcts, which is an unusual presentation of enteric fever. The condition was reversed with antibiotics routinely used to treat enteric fever in the country.

Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) is a rare condition triggered by exposure to various drugs containing sulfhydryl compounds, proton pump inhibitors, supplements, plasma proteins, viral infections like measles, influenza, hepatitis C, and autoimmune conditions like Graves' disease and systemic lupus erythematosus. We report two patients with recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia who were then diagnosed with IAS due to the consumption of α-lipoic acid (ALA) present in a multivitamin supplement. Eating small, frequent meals containing complex carbohydrates and steroids helps normalize blood glucose levels and reduce the insulin autoantibodies (IAA) to undetectable levels.

The aim of the present study was to produce exo-polygalacturonase from potent soil isolate by submerged fermentation and its application for fruit juice treatment. Pectinase producing strains were selectively isolated from pectin industry waste. A selected isolate C2 was found to produce significant amount of exo-polygalacturonase.

We report the production of two types of siderophores namely catecholate and hydroxamate in modified succinic acid medium (SM) from Alcaligenes faecalis. Two fractions of siderophores were purified on amberlite XAD, major fraction was hydroxamate type having a λ(max) at 224 nm and minor fraction appeared as catecholate with a λ(max) of 264 nm. The recovery yield obtained from major and minor fractions was 297 and 50 mg ml(-1) respectively.

The aim of this study was to characterise siderophores of a culture bearing better probiotic qualities of human origin. In this direction, bacterial strain ST2 was isolated from faecal sample of 6-month-old healthy infant, which showed close similarity with Escherichia coli based on 16S r-RNA gene sequence analysis and biochemical characteristics. It was tested for siderophore production under in vitro iron limiting intestinal conditions.
