Article Synopsis
  • A 28-year-old male suffered a rare talus fracture after a road traffic accident, leading to severe pain and inability to walk.
  • Imaging revealed multiple fractures in the talus, prompting surgical intervention involving open reduction and internal fixation.
  • Post-surgery, the patient experienced no complications, and follow-up showed successful recovery with excellent functional scores and range of motion in the ankle.

Pelvic fractures are the most common among patients sustaining high-energy trauma. They are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, often because of high blood loss and injury to the lumbosacral plexus, genitourinary system, and gastrointestinal system. The age, complexity of the pelvic fracture, and pubic symphysis diastasis would represent risk factors for erectile dysfunction after major and neglected pelvic injuries; the neglected pelvic ring injuries could cause disabilities that manifest with symptoms like pain, lower limb length discrepancy, standing or sitting imbalance and even sexual dysfunction.

Objective measurement of the lumen area demands an intraoperative diagnostic tool to aid on-site decision-making. We present a compliant mechanism-based unfurling actuator assembly integrated with a shaft connected to a motorized encoder to translate torque from the user at the proximal end to the actuator at the distal end. The actuator assembly has flexible arms coiled inside a cylindrical casing that moves radially outward upon actuation.

We have developed a semi-automated system integrated with MEMS-based electromechanical sensors to characterize human brain tumors. The electrical impedance and elastic moduli of three types of brain tumors and six normal brain regions were evaluated using the system. The impedance and elastic modulus of glioma was found to be significantly lower than the normal region.

The present study aims to document the contamination levels and ecological risks of heavy metals in the sediments of Kavaratti lagoon, India. A total of 15 sediment samples were collected for the analysis of Al, Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn. The decreasing trend of heavy metals was observed in the lagoon sediment as Pb > Zn > Al > Mn > Ni > Cr > Cd > Cu.
