Given that there are both sex-based structural differences in the respiratory system and age-associated declines in pulmonary function, the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of age and sex on the metabolic cost of breathing (V̇o) for exercise ventilations in healthy younger and older males and females. Forty healthy participants (10 young males 24 ± 3 yr; 10 young females 24 ± 3 yr; 10 older males 63 ± 3 yr, 10 older females 63 ± 6 yr) mimicked their exercise breathing patterns (voluntary hyperpnea) in the absence of exercise across a range of exercise intensities. At peak exercise, V̇o represented a significantly greater fraction of peak oxygen consumption (V̇o) in young females, 12.

Background: We have recently demonstrated that human-CD47 (hCD47) expressed on endothelial cells of porcine lung xenografts extended median graft survival from 3.5 days to 8.7 days in baboons.

Background: Despite recent progress in survival times of xenografts in non-human primates, there are no reports of survival beyond 5 days of histologically well-aerated porcine lung grafts in baboons. Here, we report our initial results of pig-to-baboon xeno-lung transplantation (XLTx).
Methods: Eleven baboons received genetically modified porcine left lungs from either GalT-KO alone (n = 3), GalT-KO/humanCD47(hCD47)/hCD55 (n = 3), GalT-KO/hD47/hCD46 (n = 4), or GalT-KO/hCD39/hCD46/hCD55/TBM/EPCR (n = 1) swine.

Phonotactics-constraints on the position and combination of speech sounds within syllables-are subject to statistical differences that gradiently affect speaker and listener behavior (e.g., Vitevitch & Luce, 1999).

Class I mismatched kidney transplantation in Massachusetts General Hospital MHC-defined miniature swine has been studied extensively as a model for induction of systemic allograft tolerance. In a large series of juvenile swine, long-term graft acceptance has been observed consistently following a 12-day course of cyclosporine. It was therefore surprising when three of five recipients in one of our studies rejected their grafts.
