Alpha-defensin 1 is a small antimicrobial peptide that acts as the first line of defense against pathogens. It is induced following microbial cues and inflammatory signals in neutrophils and Paneth cells in the small intestine, which suggests that it plays a role in microbial homeostasis in the gut. The gut microbial products also serve as ligands for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), an environmental sensor.

Combating the challenge of marine litter requires an understanding of its distribution and accumulation for mitigative measures, and its sources for targeted preventative measures. The latter is generally not well assessed through most beach litter registration protocols available to citizen scientists. Deep Dives were specifically developed to provide management with additional relevant data on the sources of and behaviours leading to littering in the Arctic.

Introduction: Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by immune cell dysregulation and alterations in the gut microbiome. In our previous report, we showed a natural product in cruciferous vegetables and ligand of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), indole-3-carbinol (I3C), was able to reduce colitis-induced disease severity and microbial dysbiosis in an interleukin-22 (IL-22) dependent manner.

Methods: In the current study, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) from colonocytes during colitis induction and supplementation with I3C and show how this treatment alters expression of genes involved in IL-22 signaling.

We previously reported that an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligand, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), was effective at reducing colitis severity through immune cell-mediated interleukin-22 (IL-22) production. Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are also involved in regulating colitis, so we investigated their AhR-mediated mechanisms in the current report. A transcriptome analysis of IECs in wildtype (WT) mice revealed that during colitis, I3C regulated select mucin proteins, which could be attributed to goblet cell development.

This article reviews the current trends and management of trauma care for children. With traumatic injury being the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, it is important for all clinicians to be familiar with the proper care of these patients. This includes, but is not limited to, when pediatric trauma patients initially present to medical facilities ranging from outpatient medical offices and urgent care facilities to adult trauma centers.
