Validation of an Oral Health Tool for Clinicians to Screen Patients With Cardiovascular Disease.

Aims: To develop and validate a screening tool to identify patients with cardiovascular disease at risk of poor oral health and requiring referrals.

Design: This study was part of a larger pilot study involving a cross-sectional survey and an oral health assessment conducted with patients with cardiovascular disease.

Methods: A four-item screening tool was developed by an expert panel and validated through a cross-sectional survey of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Evaluation and Optimisation of a Patient Portal Implementation: An Action Research Approach.

Patient portals can support care delivery and have demonstrated mixed impacts on patients, clinicians and health services. These variable impacts are primarily due to barriers to uptake and challenges associated with successfully implementing patient portals. As little is currently known about how implementation barriers can be addressed in practice, this project used an action research approach to evaluate and optimise the implementation of a patient portal in a real-world setting.

The development of a new oral health patient reported outcome measure: the New South Wales public dental services approach.

Background: Addressing Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) is essential for patient-centred care, shared decision making and improved health outcomes. Value-based health care systems in New South Wales (NSW) have a growing focus on collecting and using PROs that matter most to patients to improve their healthcare outcomes. Developing oral health patient reported outcomes measures (OH-PROM) is a first step towards value-based oral health care.

Integrated oral care for patients with spinal cord injuries: perceptions of non-dental professionals.

Purpose: To understand the oral health attitudes, knowledge, and practices among non-dental professionals caring for patients with spinal cord injuries, as well as the barriers and facilitators to oral care across acute and rehabilitation hospital settings.

Materials And Methods: This study was a descriptive qualitative study. Nine focus groups with spinal cord injury clinicians from two Sydney hospitals were conducted ( = 35).

Background: Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are at an increased risk of poor oral health compared to the general population. However, little is known about the related barriers and facilitators experienced by these individuals within the hospital setting.

Objectives: Understand the oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices of people with SCIs, barriers and facilitators to managing their oral health, and recommendations to improve oral care at acute/rehabilitation hospital settings.
