Introduction: We aimed to validate the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) within a kidney stone disease (KSD) population, determine the variability of patient activation within this population, and characterize relationships between activation and variables such as health literacy, quality of life, and demographics.

Methods: This cross-sectional study includes individuals 18 years or older followed for KSD at University of Montreal Hospital Center. Demographic data and responses for the PAM, Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life scale, and health literacy questionnaire (HLQ) were acquired.

X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the structural, surface and particles properties of a series of zinc oxides (ZnO) doped with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) that were prepared using the sol-gel method. The results demonstrated that the crystallinity of the catalysts decreased as the PVA content increased beyond 5 PVA/ZnO. However, on raising the calcination temperature up to 500 °C, the average crystal size of the PVA/ZnO nanoparticles increased.

Article Synopsis
  • The JAK-STAT signaling cascade is a crucial pathway in cells that affects immune function and blood cell development, and it’s conserved across evolution.
  • Mutations in the JAK-STAT pathway are linked to an increasing number of diseases, including inherited immune disorders and conditions that mimic them due to acquired genetic changes.
  • This review covers the clinical symptoms and causes of JAK-STAT-related diseases, along with important guidelines for diagnosis and treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of combining chemotherapy with irreversible electroporation (IRE) in patients with advanced gallbladder cancer (GBC) that cannot be surgically removed.
  • It involves enrolling patients with specific criteria and randomly assigning them to either receive chemotherapy alone or the combination treatment, aiming to measure clinical benefits, overall survival, feasibility, safety, and quality of life.
  • The research seeks to enhance treatment outcomes for inoperable gallbladder cancer by utilizing both local and systemic therapeutic approaches.
