Radiation risk amongst orthopaedic surgeons - Do we know the risk?

Radiation risk amongst orthopaedic surgeons and theatre personnel is increasing with increased use of fluoroscopy imaging. Increased radiation risk has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of malignancies, ocular and thyroid disorders. Very high exposures have been reported in spinal surgery and during intra-medullary nailing.

Long term results of impaction Bone grafting using a synthetic graft (Apapore) in revision hip surgery.

Introduction: Impaction Bone grafting (IBG) in Revision THR is challenging and places demands on allograft stores. Identifying a potential synthetic replacement that works in the longer term was the aim of this study.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 21 sequential patients who had undergone revision THR using IBG.

Intra-pelvic migration of femoral head trial in total hip arthroplasty, a rare intra-operative complication: a systematic literature review.

Trial reduction while performing total hip replacement is an essential step of the procedure. This is to check the stability of the hip joint with the selected implant sizes and to assess the leg length to avoid discrepancy. Disengagement of the femoral head trial from the femoral rasp stem with subsequent migration of the trial head into the pelvic cavity is a rare occurrence, but can be a very frustrating complication to both the surgeon and occasionally the patient.

Use of a rectal snare to remove a hypopharyngeal haemangioma.

We describe in this case report a new technique for treatment of hypopharyngeal haemangioma, using the surgical diathermy snare. The snare was easily introduced through the direct laryngoscope, without any difficulties. The procedure was simple, rapid and involved minimal bleeding.
