Background/purpose: Despite the prevalence of surgical intervention in seriously ill children, data is scarce regarding interventions performed based on type of serious illness. We therefore sought to evaluate the surgical interventions performed from the time of serious illness diagnosis to the present in a cohort of children receiving palliative care, including identification of the surgical specialists involved in these procedures.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of surgical interventions in 197 children enrolled in a multicenter prospective cohort study (Pediatric Palliative Care Research Network SHARE Study).
Few studies have reported the real-world use of both romiplostim and eltrombopag in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). TRAIT was a retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the platelet responses and adverse effects associated with the use of these thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs) in adult patients with ITP in the United Kingdom. Of 267 patients (median age at diagnosis, 48 years) with ITP (primary ITP [n = 218], secondary ITP [n = 49]) included in the study, 112 (42%) received eltrombopag and 155 (58%) received romiplostim as the first prescribed TPO-RA.

Purpose: To evaluate the resultant thickness of the WaveLight FS200 (Alcon Vision, LLC) created LASIK flap compared to intended thickness at the surgical visit, using the WaveLight EX500 (Alcon Vision, LLC) pachymeter and the resultant flap diameter compared to intended diameter.
Methods: This single arm, prospective, single surgeon study assessed the accuracy of the intended flap thickness and diameter, after successful bilateral LASIK surgery. The WaveLight FS200 femtosecond laser was used to create all flaps with an intended thickness of 120 μm.
Prophylactic cannula cricothyroidotomy is a recognised technique for actual or potential difficult airway management, where it confers a number of technical and non-technical benefits. Oxygenation with this technique is traditionally achieved by way of pressure-regulated, high flow jet ventilation and requires specialised equipment and considerable expertise for safe use, neither of which are always readily available. As an alternative, we describe the management of two patients with progressive upper airway obstruction in whom prophylactic cannula cricothyroidotomy and oxygen insufflation were performed using equipment which we consider is safer, widely available and already familiar to most anaesthetists throughout Australia.
