"Insulin-like" effects of palmitate compromise insulin signalling in hypothalamic neurons.

Saturated fatty acids are implicated in the development of metabolic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. There is evidence, however, that polyunsaturated fatty acids can counteract the pathogenic effects of saturated fatty acids. To gain insight into the early molecular mechanisms by which fatty acids influence hypothalamic inflammation and insulin signalling, we performed time-course experiments in a hypothalamic cell line, using different durations of treatment with the saturated fatty acid palmitate, and the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Practical implementation of quality improvement for high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

Purpose: High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a high-risk procedure with serious errors reported in the medical literature. Our goal was to develop a quality improvement framework for HDR brachytherapy using a multidisciplinary approach. This work describes the time, personnel, and materials involved in implementation as well as staff-reported safety benefits of quality improvement checklists.

Human ether-à-go-go-related gene (hERG) potassium channel activity helps shape the cardiac action potential and influences its duration. In this study, we report the discovery of 3-nitro-N-(4-phenoxyphenyl) benzamide (ICA-105574), a potent and efficacious hERG channel activator with a unique mechanism of action. In whole-cell patch-clamp studies of recombinant hERG channels, ICA-105574 steeply potentiated current amplitudes more than 10-fold with an EC(50) value of 0.

Craniospinal irradiation is an integral part of treatment for a number of cancers. Typically, patients are positioned prone, which allows visualization of field matches. However, a supine position allows better airway access for patients requiring anesthesia, and is more comfortable for patients.
