In vitro evaluation of the percutaneous absorption of progesterone in anhydrous permeation-enhancing base using the Franz skin finite dose model and mass spectrometry.

Progesterone is used for hormone replacement therapy through various routes of administration. This study was conducted to (a) evaluate the stability of progesterone in a proprietary anhydrous permeation-enhancing base (APEB) and the efficiency of its skin permeation, and (b) determine the appropriateness of mass spectrometry as a method of analysis for permeated progesterone. Using a proven stability-indicating ultra-performance liquid chromatographic method, the compounded hormone (100 mg progesterone/g APEB gel) was determined to be physically and chemically stable at room temperature for six months.

(Re)Conceptualizing decision-making tools in a risk governance framework for emerging technologies-the case of nanomaterials.

The utility of decision-making tools for the risk governance of nanotechnology is at the core of this paper. Those working in nanotechnology risk management have been prolific in creating such tools, many derived from European FP7 and H2020-funded projects. What is less clear is how such tools might assist the overarching ambition of creating a fair system of risk governance.

Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS) for drug discovery and development survey: Results on methods, applications and regulatory compliance.

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is increasingly used for drug discovery and development to understand target enagement, tissue distribution, drug toxicity, and disease mechanisms, etc. However, this is still a relatively new technique that requires further development validation before it will be an acceptable technique to support regulated development of new drugs. Thus, best practices will need to be established to build more confidence and gain wider acceptance by the scientific community, pharmaceutical industry, and regulatory authorities.

A tool to evaluate proportionality and necessity in the use of restrictive practices in forensic mental health settings: the DRILL tool (Dundrum restriction, intrusion and liberty ladders).

Background: Prevention of violence due to severe mental disorders in psychiatric hospitals may require intrusive, restrictive and coercive therapeutic practices. Research concerning appropriate use of such interventions is limited by lack of a system for description and measurement. We set out to devise and validate a tool for clinicians and secure hospitals to assess necessity and proportionality between imminent violence and restrictive practices including de-escalation, seclusion, restraint, forced medication and others.

The psychiatric management of prisoners on hunger strike: developing a management algorithm using the Delphi technique.

Purpose: The assessment and management of prisoners on hunger strikes in a custodial setting is complex. There is limited clinical guidance available for psychiatrists to draw upon in such cases. The purpose of this paper is to develop a management algorithm through expert elicitation to inform the psychiatric care of prisoners on a hunger strike.
