Lasing in a femtosecond-laser-written single-scan waveguide fabricated in Tm-doped BGG glass.

We report lasing action in a femtosecond-laser-inscribed waveguide in thulium-doped barium-gallium-germanium oxide (BGG) glass. A laser cavity was assembled with this waveguide that provided a single-mode output of 62 mW when pumped at 1.6 µm.

FLASH Radiotherapy: Benefits, Mechanisms, and Obstacles to Its Clinical Application.

Radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to be a cornerstone of both palliative and curative tumor care. RT has generally been reported to be sharply limited by ionizing radiation (IR)-induced toxicity, thereby constraining the control effect of RT on tumor growth. FLASH-RT is the delivery of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) several orders of magnitude higher than what is presently used in conventional RT (CONV-RT).

Background: The study of eye-movement strategies of athletes of various disciplines and skill levels is highly significant for sports psychology, since the results can be used in training to improve performance. Such studies are extremely scarce for ice hockey.

Objective: To determine successful eye-movement strategies for ice hockey players compared to wrestlers and controls (non-athletes) during puck-hitting tasks of various degrees of difficulty, using virtual reality.

In this Letter, we demonstrate a single-stage erbium-doped fluoride fiber amplifier composed of two spliced large core fibers with respective diameters of 85 and 130 µm. An optical parametric generator (OPG) operating at a 5 kHz repetition rate, and providing ∼2 ns pulse duration, and an average output power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 2.8 µm was used as a seed source.

The primary role of telomerase is the lengthening of telomeres. Nonetheless, emerging evidence highlights additional functions of telomerase outside of the nucleus. Specifically, its catalytic subunit, TERT (Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase), is detected in the cytosol and mitochondria.
