Associations of a new human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) with different forms of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in Russia have been studied. Search for this virus genetic information has been carried out in biopsy specimens of benign and malignant tumors other than KS, and probable sites of HHV-8 latency in human body have been checked. HHV-8 sequences were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Representatives of various population groups in Azerbaijan were tested for infection with human T-lymphotropic (HTLV-I and HTLV-II) and hepatotropic viruses (HCV and HBV). A total of 835 sera were studied by screening and specific tests for virus-specific antibodies and/or antigens. Thirty-five DNA specimens from peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed in the PCR for HTLV-I-specific sequences.

The present investigation was carried out to estimate the incidence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cases among gastric carcinoma (GC) patients in Russia. Carcinoma specimens from 184 patients with GC treated at the Cancer Research Center were investigated by EBV encoded RNA-1 (EBER-1) in situ hybridization. Seventeen (9.

Interaction between human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV) with B cells and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was studied by immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, virus isolation in permissive T-cell cultures, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). HTLV-1 in vitro infects the B-cell cultures containing EBV but not EBV-negative cell lines. Productive infection of EBV+ B cells was associated with syncytium formation which led to the elimination of HTLV-1 producing cells.

Nontumorigenic clone FR-7 cl 13 from fibroblasts of athymic rat was obtained from stroma of human colon carcinoma xenograft propagated on nude animals. Spontaneous transformation of this cells was absent after 40 passages in vitro and treatment with pSV2neo. But cells give rise to tumors in athymic mice after transfection with pEJ.
