The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5  cm×5  cm×5  cm TeO_{2} crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130}Te. Unprecedented in size among cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic throughgoing particles. Using the first tonne year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various standard model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter.

Plus disease was first defined in the original International Classification of retinopathy of prematurity (ICROP) publication in 1984. Over time, the definition of plus disease has evolved, and each ensuing ICROP publication has included example plus disease images. Because plus disease is often present when treatment is indicated, it is important to evaluate whether the retinal vascular characteristics (ie, dilation and tortuosity) depicted in these example images have remained the same or changed over time.

Background And Aim: Geospatial analyses integrate location-based sociodemographic data, offering a promising approach to investigate the impact of social determinants on acute pancreatitis outcomes. This study aimed to examine the association of social vulnerability index (SVI) and its constituent 16 attributes in 4 domains (socioeconomic status, household composition and disability, minority status and language, and housing type and transportation), with outcomes in patients with acute pancreatitis.

Methods: This study included acute pancreatitis patients hospitalized between 1/1/2008 and 12/31/2021 and recorded their demographics and clinical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on refractive changes observed in children aged 5 years who underwent cataract surgery with intraocular lens placement before age 2.
  • It analyzed data from 96 children, comparing results between unilateral and bilateral cataract cases, as well as those operated on at different ages (1 to <7 months vs. 7-24 months).
  • The findings indicated that children operated on between 1 to <7 months experienced significantly more refractive change compared to those operated on later, suggesting careful consideration is needed when selecting lens power and target refraction for younger patients.

Pancreatic cancer has the worst prognosis of all common tumors. Earlier cancer diagnosis could increase survival rates and better assessment of metastatic disease could improve patient care. As such, there is an urgent need to develop biomarkers to diagnose this deadly malignancy.
