Quality and Safety of Fresh Beef in Retail: A Review.

Abstract: This study aimed to review the scientific literature on the quality and safety of beef sold in retail, methodologies used for quality evaluation, and proposed interventions for the sector. Bibliographical research was performed to identify scientific articles using the electronic databases Ovid, PubMed, Scielo, LILACS, Scopus, and Embase. Thirty-three articles were included in the review.

Urban gardening and neglected and underutilized species in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Background: Urban agriculture has been evidenced as a food production and environmental sustainability strategy, although it faces many obstacles in Latin American countries. Additionally, in urban areas, low consumption of fruit and greenery is noticeable, along with loss in food diversity, including the neglected and underutilized species (NUS), which involve potential to strengthen local food systems. For this reason, this work has sought to map urban gardens in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, characterizing their gardeners, and to systematize information regarding food produced and the use of NUS.

Trade and safety issues of raw beef from the countryside of Bahia state, Brazil.

Brazil is one of the world's largest meat exporters. However, there is a paradox in this situation due to existing non-inspected meat trade and technical-sanitary failures in retail marketing. This study aimed at characterizing the issues of trade, food safety and quality of raw beef in the street market of a municipality in the state of Bahia.

Street Food, Food Safety, and Regulation: What is the Panorama in Colombia?

Abstract: Public management of street food is a challenge in many countries. In Colombia, despite the extent of the economic, social, and food contributions of the segment and the concern from the public health perspective, the amount of research on the subject still remains insufficient. Thus, this study aimed to establish a panorama of the street food trade in Colombia, considering its mode of operation, food security, and regulatory context, based on the scientific literature published between 2000 and 2018.

Post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables in supply centers in Salvador, Brazil: Analysis of determinants, volumes and reduction strategies.

Food losses and waste are a global problem, with an estimated 1.3 billion tons lost annually. In Brazil, fruit and vegetable losses amount to approximately 30% and occur in the processing, handling and storage stages.

[Training for female shellfish gatherers on food safety and worker's health: an experience in the community of Ilha do Paty, Brazil].

This study describes an experience in the training of female shellfish gatherers in the fishing community in Ilha do Paty, São Francisco do Conde, within the context of actions to promote health and food safety. This is an intervention study with planning of activities by a multidisciplinary team. The activities were developed in five stages: survey of topics of interest; awareness; female shellfish gatherers' work routine; teaching of best practices in the processing of shellfish; and group conversation.

[Street food and intervention: strategies and proposals to the developing world].

The objective of this study is to analyze the intervention strategies presented for the street food segment, based on national and international studies and reports. According to the literature, it is observed a broad character of these intervention strategies, including actions directed to sellers, consumers, public human resources and to the development of appropriate technologies. In relation to the vendors, the strategies highlight the necessity of the activity regulation, the establishment of sanitary regulations, guidelines or codes to the activity as well as training of food handlers and vendors.
