Layer-by-layer (LbL) multilayer films were prepared using phenylboronic acid-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrimers and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in order to investigate the glucose sensitivity of the films. We used dendrimer derivatives modified with 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid (3CPBA-D) and 3-carboxy-5-nitrophenylboronic acid (3C5NPBA-D) to evaluate the effect of electron-withdrawing nitro groups on glucose sensitivity. PVA/3CPBA-D and PVA/3C5NPBA-D films were prepared on the surface of a quartz slide from PVA and 3CPBA-D or 3C5NPBA-D solutions at pH 7.

Gold (Au) electrodes coated with layer-by-layer (LbL) thin films composed of chitosan (CHI) were prepared to evaluate the redox properties of hexaammine ruthenium ions, Ru(NH₃)₆, and ferricyanide ions, Fe(CN)₆ LbL films were prepared on an Au electrode by electrostatic LbL deposition using polycationic CHI and poly(vinyl sulfate) (PVS) or poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as anionic component. Redox peak current in cyclic voltammetry of Ru(NH₃)₆ on the CHI/PVS and CHI/PAA film-coated electrodes increased with increasing thickness of the films. Interestingly, the cyclic voltammograms showed two pair of redox peaks, originating from Ru(NH₃)₆ diffusing across the LbL layers and from those confined in the film.
