Although the major green tea catechins can inhibit the activity of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes, there is a paucity of information describing the potential of other green tea ingredients and numerous green tea cultivars. Herein, we reveled that a green tea cultivar Sunrouge significantly suppressed the postprandial blood glucose level in mice. Unlike the most representative Japanese green tea cultivar, Yabukita, the suppression by Sunrouge was observed clearly during the initial period after oral dosing of starch.

Boryl- and amino-substituted acetylenes bearing diphenylboryl or 9-borabicyclononyl groups were synthesized. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the dimerized structures of these acetylenes via the formation of B2C2 four-membered rings. Spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations indicated that these dimers can dissociate to afford monomeric acetylenes, and that the equilibrium constant for the dissociation depends on the structure of the boryl substituents.

The chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel (PTX) causes peripheral neuropathy as a major dose-limiting side effect, and this peripheral neuropathy is difficult to control. Our previous report showed that prophylactic repetitive administration of goshajinkigan ( niú chē shèn qì wán), but not hachimijiogan ( bā wèi dì huáng wán), which lacks two of the constituents of goshajinkigan, inhibited PTX-induced mechanical allodynia in mice. We investigated whether milnacipran, a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, would have therapeutic effect on oxaliplatin-induced mechanical allodynia in mice. A single intraperitoneal injection of oxaliplatin (3 mg/kg) induced mechanical allodynia, which peaked on day 10 after injection and almost completely subsided by day 20. Ten days post-oxaliplatin injection, the intraperitoneal administration of milnacipran (3-30 mg/kg) significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the established mechanical allodynia.

Peripheral neuropathy is a major dose-limiting side effect of the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel. This study examined whether the three related traditional herbal formulations, goshajinkigan (GJG; Niú Chē Shèn Qì Wán), hachimijiogan (HJG; Bā Wèi Dì Huáng Wán), and rokumigan (RMG; Liù Wèi Wán), would relieve paclitaxel-induced mechanical allodynia in mice. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA-1) is essential for maintenance of EBV latency. Four mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the part of the EBNA-1 sequence (amino acids 451-641) containing the domain that forms a homodimeric eight-stranded beta-barrel were generated and characterized, examined for immunocytochemical staining, immunoblotting and isoelectric focusing of EBNA-1 proteins, and used to examine interactions between EBNA-1 polypeptides by far-Western blot assays. Far-Western blot analyses using the mAbs suggest that both the beta-strand (aa 593-604) and alpha helix (aa 568-582) are essential for EBNA-1 dimerization, consistent with yeast two-hybrid studies of mutant EBNA-1 polypeptides.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigens 2 and 1 (EBNA-2 and EBNA-1, respectively) were studied using sera from healthy individuals of a population with a high incidence of asymptomatic primary EBV infections during infancy or childhood in Japan. Two CHO-K1 cell lines expressing EBNA-2 and EBNA-1 were used for anticomplement and indirect immunofluorescence assays. The positivity rate for EBNA-2 IgG rose in the 1- to 2-year age group, increased and remained at a plateau ( approximately 45%) between 3 and 29 years of age (3- to 4-, 5- to 9-, 10- to 14-, and 15- to 29-year age groups), and then reached 98% by age 40 (>/== 40-year age group).
