Clinical Utility of CSF Correction Factors for Traumatic Lumbar Puncture in Adults.

- The study aimed to identify signs of false pleocytosis in adults who experienced traumatic lumbar punctures, as well as to assess the effectiveness of common CSF correction factors in diagnosing this condition.
- A total of 195 adults were reviewed, revealing that 54% had false pleocytosis, indicated by higher red blood cell counts and lower white blood cell counts in their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
- The correction factors tested varied in specificity and sensitivity, with the 1 WBC:500 RBC ratio showing the highest specificity and the 1 WBC:1500 RBC ratio showing the highest sensitivity; results indicate that mild misinterpretations of pleocytosis are common and should be viewed carefully regardless of the correction used.*
