Australian experience of side-to-side isoperistaltic stricturoplasty in Crohn's disease.

Background: The Michelassi stricturoplasty has demonstrated efficacy for Crohn's disease in European and American series but has not had uptake in Australia. We report the short-term results of side-to-side isoperistaltic stricturoplasty (SSIS) in an Australian Practice.

Methods: Between March 2015 and October 2021 SSIS procedures were performed on Crohn's patients with long segment Crohn's strictures associated with obstructive symptoms, despite best medical therapy.

Reduced number of admissions with acute appendicitis but not severe acute appendicitis at two Sydney hospitals during the first COVID-19 lockdown period.

Background: This study investigated whether there was a change in acute appendicitis, appendicectomy admissions or disease severity during the 2020 lockdown period in NSW.

Methods: A retrospective before-and-after study was undertaken of patients admitted to two Sydney hospitals (St. Vincent's and Liverpool Hospitals) who had appendicectomy for presumed acute appendicitis and patients who had confirmed appendicitis but did not undergo surgery.

Cholelithiasis is a common gastrointestinal pathology with a prevalence of over 6% in the USA. Symptomatic patients can develop cholangitis, biliary colic, pancreatitis and cholecystitis. Surgical management involves laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy.

Metastatic Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma Presenting as Thoracic Cord Compression.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is an uncommon cancer and the incidence of FTC is higher in endemic areas of iodine deficiency or endemic goiter. Up until the 1990s Fiji was listed as an iodine deficient country. We report a rare case of a 53-year-old native Fijian man who presented to our hospital with spinal cord compression due to a metastatic deposit of an undiagnosed FTC.

Recurrent Hyperparathyroidism Following Successful Four-Gland Parathyroidectomy and Normalization of Parathyroid Hormone in a Renal Transplant Patient.

Chronic kidney disease has an estimated prevalence of 10% in Australia and is predicted to rise in the coming years. Secondary hyperparathyroidism resulting from chronic kidney disease is an important cause of morbidity in these patients; and screening for secondary hyperparathyroidism is recommended in international guidelines. We present the case of a chronic kidney disease patient who developed recurrent hyperparathyroidism despite previous "total" parathyroidectomy and subsequent renal transplant.
