Treatment of ankle varus with total ankle replacement (TAR) lacks consensus regarding the limits of deformity that can be managed successfully without recurrence. With newer anatomic prosthetic designs and a comprehensive surgical approach, treatment of frontal plane deformities with implant arthroplasty has gained acceptance. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the outcome and compare correction of large frontal plane varus deformities with TAR using 2 different replacement systems.

Methods: We reviewed the records of patients who underwent nephrectomy for localized disease between 1985 and 1998 at our institution. Patients were grouped according to BMI as normal (less than 25 kg/m2), overweight (25 to 30 kg/m2), or obese (more than 30 kg/m2).
