Prcis: Patient education and dosing self-efficacy are important factors related to ongoing adherence to glaucoma topical treatment, and patients view their disease management as a shared effort with their provider.

Purpose: Glaucoma affects nearly 3 million Americans, and medication adherence has been reported to be as low as 20% in this patient population; however, key limitations to our understanding of this behavior in adults with glaucoma exist.

Patients And Methods: This research used an electronic survey including validated concepts related to topical medication use and an in-person interview to investigate the influencers of and solutions for challenges to medication adherence in adults with glaucoma.

Comparison of cidofovir and the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine in the treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

We conducted a retrospective study of the use of cidofovir and the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccineas adjunctive treatments to lesion debridement in patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Our study population was made up of 15 children-7 boys and 8 girls, aged 1 to 16 years at diagnosis (mean: 6.2)-with pathologically confirmed RRP who had been followed for at least 1 year.

In vivo ultrasonic detection of polyurea crosslinked silica aerogel implants.

Background: Polyurea crosslinked silica aerogels are highly porous, lightweight, and mechanically strong materials with great potential for in vivo applications. Recent in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated the biocompatibility of this type of aerogel. The highly porous nature of aerogels allows for exceptional thermal, electric, and acoustic insulating capabilities that can be taken advantage of for non-invasive external imaging techniques.

Sialolipoma of the parotid gland: Case report with literature review comparing major and minor salivary gland sialolipomas.

Sialolipoma is a rare tumor found within both major and minor salivary glands. Here we discuss sialolipoma of the parotid gland and briefly review the English literature. Including our case, a total of 35 sialolipomas have been reported, 18 within major salivary glands and 17 within minor salivary glands.

Is obesity truly a risk factor for mortality after tracheotomy?

Objectives: We sought to determine the short-term and long-term overall mortality rates in obese and non-obese patients after tracheotomy and to evaluate which factors, including the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), predict mortality rates among obese patients.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent open tracheotomy in the operating room at a single hospital from 2005 to 2010.

Results: Of 200 patients reviewed, 146 were non-obese and 54 were obese.

Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of the tongue base: a cadaver feasibility study.

Objective: The authors hypothesize that floor-of-mouth and tongue base anatomy can be visualized with ultrasound and that ultrasound can be used to accurately guide needle placement and dye injection into the tongue base, serving as a surrogate for fine-needle aspiration.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck: a 20-year case series.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) can be an aggressive disease with locoregional and distant metastasis. We present this article (1) to highlight the typical presentation of NEC in head and neck primary sites such as the parotid gland, paranasal sinuses, and supraglottis and (2) to discuss the prognosis of these tumors based on their histologic subtype and stage. The value of PET/CT to assess clinically negative necks.

The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of [(18)F]-2-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in evaluating metastasis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) to the cervical lymph nodes, with specific attention to the efficacy in regard to clinically negative necks. This was a retrospective review of 243 patients with HNSCC between years 2005 and 2007 treated at a comprehensive cancer care institution who underwent pre-operative PET/CT and neck dissection with either an N0 (112 patients) or N+ (131 patients) clinical nodal status. PET/CT findings were correlated with histopathological results of surgical specimens.
