GABA-A receptors (GABARs) are crucial for development and function of the brain. Altered GABAergic transmission is hypothesized to be involved in neurodevelopmental disorders. Recently, we identified Shisa7 as a GABAR auxiliary subunit that modulates GABAR trafficking and GABAergic transmission.

Diverse populations of GABA receptors (GABARs) throughout the brain mediate fast inhibitory transmission and are modulated by various endogenous ligands and therapeutic drugs. Deficits in GABAR signaling underlie the pathophysiology behind neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. Pharmacological intervention for these disorders relies on several drug classes that target GABARs, such as benzodiazepines and more recently neurosteroids.
