Background And Objectives: Congenital syphilis (CS) is increasing in the United States and is associated with intersecting social and structural determinants of health. This study aimed to delineate birthing parent characteristics associated with CS in an adjusted model. METHODS (N = 720): People diagnosed with syphilis during pregnancy from 2017 to 2018 who were interviewed and linked to infants in the California state surveillance system were included (herein, "birthing parents").

Accurate reporting of neurosyphilis diagnoses is important to quantify and monitor severe outcomes associated with infection of Treponemal pallidum. This analysis compared the demographic distribution of neurosyphilis diagnoses in sexually transmitted disease surveillance data with administrative hospital data in the California Project Area from 2016 to 2018. Although neurosyphilis morbidity was similar, significant differences were noted by sex, age group, race/ethnicity, and region.

Background: Transgender women and transgender men are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and may be vulnerable to other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but the lack of surveillance data inclusive of gender identity hinders prevention and intervention strategies.

Methods: We analyzed data from 506 transgender women (1045 total visits) and 120 transgender men (209 total visits) who attended 26 publicly funded clinics that provide STD services in 6 US cities during a 3.5-year observation period.

Background: Congenital syphilis (CS)-the preventable transmission of Treponema pallidum from infected mother to fetus-remains a significant problem worldwide.

Methods: From July through November 2017, 239 articles relevant to CS prevention were identified via keyword searches in PubMed and Google Scholar, ancestry searches, and expert recommendation. Articles were then assessed for (1) measurement of a specified CS or adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) and (2) geographic setting in high/upper middle income countries according to United Nations criteria.

Improving early discharges may improve patient flow and increase hospital capacity. We conducted a national survey of academic medical centers addressing the prevalence, importance, and effectiveness of early-discharge initiatives. We assembled a list of hospitalist and general internal medicine leaders at 115 US-based academic medical centers.

We report the rare finding of rhabditiform larvae in biliary fluid, here associated with cholecystitis and near total portal vein thrombosis. The role of leading to atypical clinical presentations and difficulty diagnosing strongyloidiasis in such patients with appropriate geographic exposure is discussed.

Physicians often fail to communicate well with patients. The objective of this retrospective controlled interrupted time series study was to evaluate the impact of a standardized communication intervention to improve physician communication. All patients ages 18 years or older (N = 7739 visits) admitted to University of Utah Health Care in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 1, 2012, to June 31, 2014, were included.

Background: Treatment verification and contact elicitation are core approaches used to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Methodology adapted from the HIV care continuum is presented as an evaluation and communication tool for STD control activities.

Methods: Sexually transmitted disease surveillance and program data for Los Angeles County in 2013 were used to construct a 2-part continuum to examine syphilis (all stages) and gonorrhea outcomes among index patients and elicited contacts.

Background: Few nationally representative studies have examined racial/ethnic disparities in alcohol services utilization. Further, little is known about whether racial/ethnic disparities generalize across genders, and what factors account for these disparities. Thus, we aimed to describe the combined impact of race/ethnicity and gender on alcohol services utilization, and to explore the roles for social influence factors in explaining racial/ethnic and gender disparities.

The 2007-2009 US economic recession was marked by unprecedented rates of housing instability and relatively little is known about how this instability impacted alcohol problems. While previous studies have linked homelessness to increased rates of alcohol use and abuse, housing instability during a recession impacts a much larger segment of the population and usually does not result in homelessness. Using a nationally representative sample of US adults, this study examines the association between housing instability during the recession and alcohol outcomes.

Mobile phone social networking applications such as GRINDR are potential tools for recruitment of men who have sex with men (MSM) for HIV prevention research. Demographics and sexual risk behaviors of men recruited through GRINDR and through traditional media were compared. GRINDR participants were younger (mean age 31 vs.

Data from 635 very poor men who have sex with men (MSM) were used to identify seroadaptation with 1,102 male partners reported between 2005 and 2007 in Los Angeles as part of the Sexual Acquisition and Transmission of HIV Cooperative Agreement Program. The mean age of the sample was 41.7 years; 53 % had experienced homelessness in the past year.

Interleukin 7 (IL-7) and T cell antigen receptor signals have been proposed to be the main drivers of homeostatic T cell proliferation. However, it is not known why CD4(+) T cells undergo less-efficient homeostatic proliferation than CD8(+) T cells do. Here we show that systemic IL-7 concentrations increased during lymphopenia because of diminished use of IL-7 but that IL-7 signaling on IL-7 receptor-alpha-positive (IL-7Ralpha(+)) dendritic cells (DCs) in lymphopenic settings paradoxically diminished the homeostatic proliferation of CD4(+) T cells.
