Plants are a vital ingredient of traditional medicine in Sri Lanka, and the quantity of medicinal plants used as a number differs in literature. Field identification of medicinal plants is carried out based on various plant characteristics. Conventional identification keys are available for plant identification, but it is a complex and time-consuming process that relies on manual observation, introducing inherent errors, particularly among individuals lacking extensive botanical expertise.

This study isolated and characterized four indigenous lactic acid bacterial strains from naturally fermented green tender coconut water: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CWJ3, Lacticaseibacillus casei CWM15, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei CWKu14, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus CWKu-12. Notably, among the isolates, Lact. plantarum CWJ3 showed exceptional acid tolerance, with the highest survival rate of 37.

Background: The leaves of Cirsium brevicaule A. GRAY (CL) significantly decreased hepatic lipid accumulation and the expression of fatty acid synthase gene (FASN) in mice.

Purpose: We aimed to purify and identify the active compound(s) from CL and determine the inhibitory mechanism of expression of FASN.

Objectives: Partially purified hexane phase (HP) of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb (PJT) was identified as an antiobesity candidate. However, the compound responsible for the antiobesity activity remained unknown. Thus, in this study we isolated the active compound, to determine the mechanisms related to antiobesity activity in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the antiobesity effects of a crude ethanolic extract from Peucedanum japonicum Thunb (PJT), focusing on its mechanisms of action in vitro.
  • Researchers separated PJT extract into different phases and tested their impact on fat accumulation and energy metabolism in various cell types.
  • Findings showed that the hexane phase (HP) reduced fat storage and increased energy expenditure, indicating its potential for obesity regulation and revealing active components through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
