Purpose: Although numerous patient-reported outcome measures have been developed and validated to quantify the impact of voice problems on different aspects of life, to our knowledge no screening instrument exists that specifically captures voice disorders in a retrospective fashion. The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties and diagnostic validity of a retrospective voice screening method, according to the COSMIN framework for health-related, patient-reported outcome measures. The items in Screen11 have been used to establish the prevalence of voice disorders in both general and occupation-specific populations in the Nordic countries.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the effectiveness of combining genomic and gut metagenomic assessments to better predict the risk of diseases like coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and prostate cancer, using data from a long-term health record follow-up.
  • The researchers found that using polygenic risk scores (PRSs) significantly enhances disease prediction compared to traditional risk factors alone.
  • By integrating PRSs with gut microbiome scores and conventional risk factors, they achieved the best predictive outcomes for the diseases studied, highlighting the potential of multiomics in early disease detection and risk profiling.

Background: Dyslipidemia is treated effectively with statins, but treatment has the potential to induce new-onset type-2 diabetes. Gut microbiota may contribute to this outcome variability. We assessed the associations of gut microbiota diversity and composition with statins.

Assessment of tumor-associated stroma has shown a reliable prognostic value in recent research. We evaluated the prognostic value of tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) in a large multicenter cohort of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We used the conventional hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of 115 cases of NPC to assess TSR as described in recent guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • The gut microbiome may serve as a useful biomarker for predicting various diseases, including liver disease, which hasn't been extensively studied yet.
  • In a study involving over 7,000 participants tracked for about 15 years, researchers combined genetic sequencing of gut bacteria with machine learning to assess the predictive ability of gut microbiota alongside traditional risk factors for liver disease.
  • Results showed that while gut microbial factors and traditional risk indicators were similarly effective on their own, combining them through machine learning significantly enhanced prediction accuracy and identified new microbial signatures linked to liver health.

Objectives: Cisplatin is combined with radiotherapy for advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). While providing a beneficial effect on survival, it also causes side effects and thus is an important target when considering treatment de-escalation. Currently, there are no biomarkers to predict its patient-selective therapeutic utility.

Article Synopsis
  • Skin serves as a crucial barrier and mediator between the body and environment, with resident microbes playing key roles in maintaining skin health and immune function.
  • Factors such as host characteristics and environmental conditions influence the diversity and composition of skin microbial communities, which are linked to chronic diseases.
  • Current microbiome research uses advanced sequencing techniques for deeper insights into microbial communities, emphasizing the need for standardized practices to improve research quality and applicability in medicine and forensics.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the long-term relationship between gut microbiome composition and the development of type 2 diabetes in a group of Finnish individuals over a 15.8-year follow-up period.
  • Researchers analyzed fecal samples from 5,572 participants and identified specific gut bacteria linked to diabetes risk, with four species and two clusters showing significant associations.
  • The findings suggest that the gut microbiome plays a role in diabetes development, indicating potential for better disease prediction and new treatment strategies based on dietary and microbial factors.

Objective: Previous studies on the association between metabolic biomarkers and hypertension have been limited by small sample sizes, low number of studied biomarkers, and cross-sectional study design. In the largest study to date, we assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between high-abundance serum biomarkers and blood pressure (BP).

Methods: We studied cross-sectional (N = 36 985; age 50.

Our aim was to validate a Finnish version of the Eating Assessment Tool (F-EAT-10) for clinical use and to test its reliability and validity in a multicenter nationwide study. Normative data were acquired from 180 non-dysphagic participants (median age 57.0 years, 62.

Background: Diet has a major influence on the human gut microbiota, which has been linked to health and disease. However, epidemiological studies on associations of a healthy diet with the microbiota utilizing a whole-diet approach are still scant.

Objectives: To assess associations between healthy food choices and human gut microbiota composition, and to determine the strength of association with functional potential.

Microbial communities exhibit spatial structure at different scales, due to constant interactions with their environment and dispersal limitation. While this spatial structure is often considered in studies focusing on free-living environmental communities, it has received less attention in the context of host-associated microbial communities or microbiota. The wider adoption of methods accounting for spatial variation in these communities will help to address open questions in basic microbial ecology as well as realize the full potential of microbiome-aided medicine.

Fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease in the world. Its connection with the gut microbiome has been known for at least 80 y, but this association remains mostly unstudied in the general population because of underdiagnosis and small sample sizes. To address this knowledge gap, we studied the link between the Fatty Liver Index (FLI), a well-established proxy for fatty liver disease, and gut microbiome composition in a representative, ethnically homogeneous population sample of 6,269 Finnish participants.

Temperatures in the Arctic are expected to increase dramatically over the next century, and transform high latitude watersheds. However, little is known about how microbial communities and their underlying metabolic processes will be affected by these environmental changes in freshwater sedimentary systems. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed sediments from Lake Hazen, NU Canada.

Anthropogenic mercury remobilization has considerably increased since the Industrial Revolution in the late 1700s. The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a United Nations treaty (2017) aiming at curbing mercury emissions. Unfortunately, evaluating the effectiveness of such a global treaty is hampered by our inability to determine the lag in aquatic ecosystem responses to a change in atmospheric mercury deposition.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant disease with an enigmatic etiology. NPC associates with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human papillomaviruses (HPVs), while immunological factors also play a role in carcinogenesis. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are pattern recognition receptors that participate in the immunological defence against pathogens, but their functions are also linked to cancer.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in endemic areas; however, the role of viruses in nonendemic countries is unclear. Our nationwide study investigated the prevalence and prognostic significance of EBV and human papillomaviruses (HPVs) in Finnish NPC tumors.

Methods: We analyzed samples from 150 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2009.

The prognostic significance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) has been studied recently in many cancers. For the first time in a nonendemic region, we have evaluated the prognostic value of TILs in a whole population-based nationwide cohort of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in Finland. A total of 115 cases from Finnish hospitals were included.

The Arctic is undergoing rapid environmental change, potentially affecting the physicochemical constraints of microbial communities that play a large role in both carbon and nutrient cycling in lacustrine environments. However, the microbial communities in such Arctic environments have seldom been studied, and the drivers of their composition are poorly characterized. To address these gaps, we surveyed the biologically active surface sediments in Lake Hazen, the largest lake by volume north of the Arctic Circle, and a small lake and shoreline pond in its watershed.

Mercury (Hg) bioavailability to bacteria in marine systems is the first step toward its bioamplification in food webs. These systems exhibit high salinity and ionic strength that will both alter Hg speciation and properties of the bacteria cell walls. The role of Hg speciation on Hg bioavailability in marine systems has not been teased apart from that of ionic strength on cell wall properties, however.
