Charge-density waves (CDWs) are correlated states of matter, in which the electronic density is modulated periodically due to electronic and phononic interactions. Often, CDW phases coexist with other correlated states, such as superconductivity, spin-density waves, or Mott insulators. Controlling CDW phases may, therefore, enable the manipulation of the energy landscape of these interacting states.

Magnetic adatoms on superconductors give rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states that hold considerable interest for the design of topological superconductivity. Here, we show that YSR states are also an ideal platform to engineer structures with intricate wave function symmetries. We assemble structures of iron atoms on the quasi-two-dimensional superconductor 2-NbSe.

Glycan-protein interactions play a crucial role in biology, providing additional functions capable of inducing biochemical and cellular responses. In the extracellular matrix of bone, this type of interactions is ubiquitous. During the synthesis of the collagen molecule, glycans are post-translationally added to specific lysine residues through an enzymatically catalysed hydroxylation and subsequent glycosylation.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on stabilizing vaccine components, specifically influenza B virus hemagglutinin (HA), by enhancing the stability of its prefusion conformation, which is crucial for effective vaccine manufacturing and potency.
  • - Researchers identified six pH-sensitive regions in the HA ectodomain that, when modified, improved the protein's expression and stability, leading to a cleavable form that facilitates the correct folding necessary for its function.
  • - Cryo-EM analysis revealed a novel pH switch in HA1 that maintains the fusion peptide in a stable position at neutral pH, preventing premature changes, and suggests potential strategies to enhance the effectiveness of influenza B vaccines.

The failure of human vaccine efficacy trials assessing a mosaic HIV-1 vaccine calls into question the translatability of preclinical SHIV challenge studies that demonstrated high efficacy of this vaccine in primates. Here we present a post hoc immune correlates analysis of HIV-1 Env peptide-binding antibody responses from the NHP13-19 study identifying the V2 loop as the principal correlate of protection in primates. Moreover, we found high V2 loop sequence identity between the Mos1 vaccine component and the SHIV challenge strain, while the vaccine showed considerably lower V2 identity to globally circulating HIV-1 sequences.

In restorative dentistry, the lack of occlusal space may lead to the mutilation of healthy tissue in order to provide sufficient space for the restorative material. Noprep dentistry can be achieved by placing high-bite restorations, followed by Simple Orthodontic Extrusion (SOE) of other teeth to close the created open bite. This rapid, partial orthodontic treatment is well accepted by patients as it can be easily performed using simple buttons, and it takes only a few weeks to reestablish occlusal contacts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to systematically investigate symptoms associated with commonly prescribed homeopathic medicines using Bayesian statistics for more accurate likelihood ratios (LR).
  • Conducted over 21 months with 1,954 patients, the research utilized the ORIDL scale to measure treatment outcomes and calculated LRs for four specific symptoms linked to six selected homeopathic remedies.
  • Findings revealed high LR+ scores for symptoms like "dyspepsia from business anxiety" and "burning pain relieved by heat," supporting existing homeopathic literature, but emphasized the need for further research to confirm results in larger populations.

One of the strategies towards an effective HIV-1 vaccine is to elicit broadly neutralizing antibody responses that target the high HIV-1 Env diversity. Here, we present an HIV-1 vaccine candidate that consists of cobalt porphyrin-phospholipid (CoPoP) liposomes decorated with repaired and stabilized clade C HIV-1 Env trimers in a prefusion conformation. These particles exhibit high HIV-1 Env trimer decoration, serum stability and bind broadly neutralizing antibodies.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study tested five spike variants with different stability levels in mice, finding that a highly stable variant (S-closed-2) induced the highest neutralizing antibody response, outperforming less stable proteins by up to 16 times.
  • * However, the most stable variant (S-locked), which prevented the spike from interacting flexibly, produced lower antibody levels against diverse strains, suggesting that further research is needed on spike protein designs to improve vaccine effectiveness.

Water is known to play an important role in collagen self-assembly, but it is still largely unclear how water-collagen interactions influence the assembly process and determine the fibril network properties. Here, we use the H[Formula: see text]O/D[Formula: see text]O isotope effect on the hydrogen-bond strength in water to investigate the role of hydration in collagen self-assembly. We dissolve collagen in H[Formula: see text]O and D[Formula: see text]O and compare the growth kinetics and the structure of the collagen assemblies formed in these water isotopomers.

Background: Nitrogen-fixing nodules occur in ten related taxonomic lineages interspersed with lineages of non-nodulating plant species. Nodules result from an endosymbiosis between plants and diazotrophic bacteria; rhizobia in the case of legumes and Parasponia and Frankia in the case of actinorhizal species. Nodulating plants share a conserved set of symbiosis genes, whereas related non-nodulating sister species show pseudogenization of several key nodulation-specific genes.

Background And Aims: Variation in colorectal neoplasia detection limits the effectiveness of screening colonoscopy. By evaluating neoplasia detection rates of individual colonoscopists, we aimed to quantify the effects of pre-procedural knowledge of a positive (+) multi-target stool DNA (mt-sDNA) on colonoscopy quality metrics.

Methods: We retrospectively identified physicians who performed a high volume of + mt-sDNA colonoscopies; colorectal neoplasia at post-mt-sDNA colonoscopy was recorded.

Patients with a facial malformation due to a cleft lip and palate (CLP) usually suffer from a reduced ability to function normally associated with a poor oral health-related quality of life. This condition often requires multiple significant surgical interventions, and the prosthetic restoration, when needed, is not always included in the initial treatment plan. In order to obtain the highest possible degree of functional, occlusal, and phonetic performance, as well as esthetics, a facially guided prosthodontic treatment sequence should be established.

  • Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutations in PKD1 or PKD2, leading to kidney cyst formation and progressive disease.
  • Research suggests that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from PKD1 knockout cells may promote cyst growth by affecting nearby cells through purinergic signaling.
  • A study demonstrated that EVs from PKD1 deficient distal convoluted tubule cells increased ATP release and activated pathways related to cell proliferation in the inner medullary collecting duct, resulting in larger cysts.

Cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy (cryoCLEM) is a powerful strategy to high resolution imaging in the unperturbed hydrated state. In this approach fluorescence microscopy aids localizing the area of interest, and cryogenic focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (cryoFIB/SEM) allows preparation of thin cryo-lamellae for cryoET. However, the current method cannot be accurately applied on bulky (3D) samples such as tissues and organoids.

The global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has resulted in emergence of lineages which impact the effectiveness of immunotherapies and vaccines that are based on the early Wuhan isolate. All currently approved vaccines employ the spike protein S, as it is the target for neutralizing antibodies. Here we describe two SARS-CoV-2 isolates with unusually large deletions in the N-terminal domain (NTD) of the spike.
