Method: Twenty predominantly African American parents of children aged 11-17 years were recruited from various community clinics and organizations to participate in focus groups about their decision-making regarding HPV vaccination. Using deductive content analysis and the Vaccine Hesitancy Determinants Matrix, we describe their perspectives and influences on vaccination decision-making.

The evolutionary origins and hybridization patterns of species in North America have been hotly debated for the past 30 years. Disentangling ancestry and timing of hybridization in Great Lakes wolves, eastern Canadian wolves, red wolves, and eastern coyotes are most often partitioned into a 2-species model that assigns all ancestry to gray wolves and/or coyotes, and a 3-species model that includes a third, North American evolved eastern wolf genome. The proposed models address recent or sometimes late Holocene hybridization events but have largely ignored potential Pleistocene era progenitors and opportunities for hybridization that may have impacted the current mixed genomes in eastern Canada and the United States.

To identify causal effects, we utilize an age-eligibility rule followed from 1980 to 1992 that limited sponsorship to children 12 years old or younger when the program was introduced in a village, allowing comparisons of sponsored children with older siblings who were slightly too old to be sponsored. Estimations indicate that international child sponsorship increased monthly income by $13-17 over an untreated baseline of $75, principally from inducing higher future labor market participation.

Top predators are disappearing worldwide, significantly changing ecosystems that depend on top-down regulation. Conflict with humans remains the primary roadblock for large carnivore conservation, but for the eastern wolf (Canis lycaon), disagreement over its evolutionary origins presents a significant barrier to conservation in Canada and has impeded protection for grey wolves (Canis lupus) in the USA. Here, we use 127,235 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified from restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) of wolves and coyotes, in combination with genomic simulations, to test hypotheses of hybrid origins of Canis types in eastern North America.

Strontium substituted hydroxyapatite (SrHA) coatings have received a lot of interest recently as strontium (Sr) has been shown to have the dual benefit of promoting bone formation and reducing bone resorption, in vivo. In this work, SrHA coatings were deposited onto polycrystalline titanium surfaces using radio frequency (RF) magnetron co-sputtering and compared to those deposited from HA alone. In particular, the influence of different levels of Sr-substitution of the sputtering targets (5 and 13% Sr-substituted HA targets) on the properties of the deposited coatings produced at a low discharge power level (150 W) were investigated using FTIR, XPS, XRD, ToFSIMS and AFM techniques (both before and after annealing at 500 °C).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn an effort to seek high-performance small molecule electron acceptor materials for use in heterojunction solar cells, computational chemistry was used to examine a variety of terminal acceptor-conjugated bridge-core acceptor-conjugated bridge-terminal acceptor small molecules. In particular, we have systematically predicted the geometric, electronic, and optical properties of 16 potential small-molecule acceptors based upon a series of electron deficient π-conjugated building blocks that have been incorporated into materials exhibiting good electron transport properties. Results show that the band gap, HOMO/LUMO energy levels, orbital spatial distribution, and intrinsic dipole moments can be systematically altered by varying the electron properties of the terminal or core acceptor units.
