The ability to work in teams is one of the most sought-after graduate skills by employers. However, team-based learning activities, and especially team-based assessments, are commonly disliked (even actively avoided) by students. Team-based assessments are often problematic for students, mostly due to logistical problems and interpersonal difficulties.

Assessment and the associated feedback from those assessments are powerful factors in the development of students' learning. We have seen a shift within the Higher Education sector to conceptualise assessment as being more than summative assessment 'of' learning. Instead, there has been a greater emphasis on assessment 'as' learning, or assessment 'for' learning, through the enhanced use of formative assessments.

Article Synopsis
  • Brentuximab vedotin has been shown to improve outcomes in treating advanced classic Hodgkin's lymphoma, but it also causes more toxic side effects in adults, while many pediatric patients still need radiation therapy and face challenges with relapse.
  • A phase 3 trial involving patients aged 12 and older tested two treatment combinations: brentuximab vedotin with standard chemotherapy (BV+AVD) versus nivolumab with standard chemotherapy (N+AVD), aiming to assess progression-free survival.
  • Results indicated that N+AVD significantly enhances progression-free survival compared to BV+AVD, with a 2-year survival rate of 92% for N+AVD versus 83% for BV

  • BamA is a crucial part of the β-barrel assembly machine (BAM) that helps insert proteins into the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria like E. coli.
  • Researchers used in vitro selection techniques to find peptide macrocycles that can disrupt BamA's function by binding to different conformational states, specifically Peptide Targeting BamA-1 (PTB1) and Peptide Targeting BamA-2 (PTB2).
  • These findings are important for developing new antibiotics targeting BamA and could also be applied to discover modulators for other similar proteins in the future.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in medical students' education being disrupted and a new direction of learning towards the online classroom, with students frequently learning to identify clinical signs via online conferencing platforms. Given this shift in student study techniques in the pandemic and post-pandemic era, we set out to analyse the confidence levels of students recognizing clinical signs in patients and the opinions and patterns of resources students would use to build up the knowledge and confidence for their future clinical practice.

Methods: OSCEazy, a student-led medical education organisation, delivered an online teaching session and disseminated a questionnaire containing ten-point Likert scales, multiple-choice questions and free text options.

Skull base chordomas and chondrosarcomas are distinct types of rare, locally aggressive mesenchymal tumors that share key principles of imaging investigation and multidisciplinary care. Maximal safe surgical resection is the treatment choice for each, often via an expanded endoscopic endonasal approach, with or without multilayer skull base repair. Postoperative adjuvant radiation therapy is frequently administered, usually with particle therapy such as proton beam therapy (PBT).

Importance: While there is a general consensus that functional connectome pathology is a key mechanism underlying psychosis spectrum disorders, the literature is plagued with inconsistencies and translation into clinical practice is non-existent. This is perhaps because group-level findings may not be accurate reflections of pathology at the individual patient level.

Objective: To characterize inter-individual heterogeneity in functional networks and investigate if normative values can be leveraged to identify biologically less heterogeneous subgroups of patients.

Background: Most schwannomas are isolated tumours occurring in otherwise healthy people. However, bilateral vestibular schwannomas (BVS) or multiple non-vestibular schwannomas indicate an underlying genetic predisposition. This is most commonly -related schwannomatosis (SWN), but when BVS are absent, this can also indicate -related or -related SWN.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate follow-up findings from CT scans of young French bulldogs that had been diagnosed with humeral intracondylar fissures after surgery for humeral condylar fractures.
  • A total of 58 out of 137 operated dogs were French bulldogs, with 12 of them having follow-up CT scans, showing that 11 of the 12 cases (91.7%) had resolved their fissures.
  • The study highlights that these fissures commonly occur in young French bulldogs and usually heal over time, suggesting follow-up imaging is important before taking additional surgical measures.

Fundamental understanding of molecular interactions and transport within microporous materials displaying cooperative Type V adsorption is challenged by the unique features of this isotherm type. In order to capture a broad understanding of this uncommon, yet industrially relevant, behavior in microporous materials, this investigation examines the adsorption equilibria and kinetics of methanol and ethanol in both a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, ZIF-8, and a high free volume polymer of intrinsic microporosity, poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne] (PTMSP). A novel formulation that can capture the cooperative effects of small alcohols in its description of adsorption equilibria and kinetics is proposed.

Background: Individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) experience impairments in social cognition that contribute to poor functional outcomes. However, mechanisms of social cognitive dysfunction in SZ remain poorly understood, which impedes the design of novel interventions to improve outcomes. In this preregistered project, we examined the representation of social cognition in the brain's functional architecture in early and chronic SZ.

Background: Clinical forecasting models have potential to optimize treatment and improve outcomes in psychosis, but predicting long-term outcomes is challenging and long-term follow-up data are scarce. In this 10-year longitudinal study, we aimed to characterize the temporal evolution of cortical correlates of psychosis and their associations with symptoms.

Design: Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from people with first-episode psychosis and controls (n = 79 and 218) were obtained at enrollment, after 12 months (n = 67 and 197), and 10 years (n = 23 and 77), within the Thematically Organized Psychosis (TOP) study.

Background: Nonauditory symptoms can be a prominent feature in patients with sporadic vestibular schwannoma (VS), but the cause of these symptoms is unknown. Inflammation is hypothesized to play a key role in the growth and symptomatic presentation of sporadic VS, and in this study, we investigated through translocator protein (TSPO) positron emission tomography (PET) whether inflammation occurred within the "normal appearing" brain of such patients and its association with tumor growth.

Methods: Dynamic PET datasets from 15 patients with sporadic VS (8 static and 7 growing) who had been previously imaged using the TSPO tracer [C]()-PK11195 were included.

Article Synopsis
  • - Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) affects about 20%-25% of patients aged 60 and older, who historically have poorer survival outcomes due to age-related health issues and treatment toxicities.
  • - A recent clinical trial compared two treatment regimens: brentuximab vedotin (BV-AVD) and nivolumab (N-AVD), finding that N-AVD improved progression-free survival (PFS) significantly in older patients (93% vs. 64% after 1 year).
  • - N-AVD was also better tolerated among older patients, showing fewer side effects and less treatment-related complications, indicating it may become the standard care for fit older patients with advanced-stage cHL.*

The inequitable distribution of economic resources and exposure to adversity between racial groups contributes to mental health disparities within the United States. Consideration of the potential neurodevelopmental consequences, however, has been limited particularly for neurocircuitry known to regulate the emotional response to threat. Characterizing the consequences of inequity on threat neurocircuitry is critical for robust and generalizable neurobiological models of psychiatric illness.
