Our hypothetical case study depicts the experience of a newly arrived refugee child, a 10-year-old refugee from war-torn Kyiv, Ukraine. She presented with symptoms of anxiety-related physical complaints following displacement and relocation to the United States. This case study illustrates the care provided by a pediatric nurse practitioner.

The ability to provide emotional and physical support to a patient during one of the most significant moments of her life is a privilege afforded to intrapartum nurses who attend to laboring and delivering patients. Labor support improves birth outcomes, reduces cesarean birth rates, and decreases anesthesia use. Within the hospital context, this quality improvement project investigated the effects of educating intrapartum nurses about labor support and providing them with hands-on training.

The paths taken by each family in coming to terms with the dismal prognosis associated with brain stem glioma can be quite different. The case studies of 2 school-age girls diagnosed with a brain stem glioma within weeks of each other are presented. The multi-disciplinary team response to each family was individualized at each stage of diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care, as expected.
