Aims: To determine the acceptability and identify potential concerns and barriers of using a hypothetical smartphone application (app) for home monitoring (HM) of visual function among patients with diabetes.
Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire. Patients diagnosed with diabetes aged between 20 and 70 years were included.
Objective: Current literature reveals an association between anthropometric measures of adiposity (AnthM) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but few have explored the disease association with imaging methods. This study aimed to explore the relationship between AMD status and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measures (DEXAMs) among a representative sample of the US population, and compare the association with AnthM.
Method: Using a representative sample in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study 2005-2006 (n=1632), DEXAMs across the whole body and waist (ie, android), and relative fat distributions (eg, percentage fat, android-to-total body ratio) were analysed between no AMD (baseline) and any AMD.
Background: Most neovascular age-related macular degeneration treatments involve long-term follow-up of disease activity. Home monitoring would reduce the burden on patients and those they depend on for transport, and release clinic appointments for other patients. The study aimed to evaluate three home-monitoring tests for patients to use to detect active neovascular age-related macular degeneration compared with diagnosing active neovascular age-related macular degeneration by hospital follow-up.

Objective: To evaluate 3 vision home-monitoring tests for patients to use to detect active nAMD compared with diagnosing active nAMD at hospital follow-up during the after-treatment monitoring phase.
Objectives: Remote monitoring of health has the potential to reduce the burden to patients of face-to-face appointments and make healthcare more efficient. Apps are available for patients to self-monitor vision at home, for example, to detect reactivation of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Describing the challenges when implementing apps for self-monitoring of vision at home was an objective of the MONARCH study to evaluate two vision-monitoring apps on an iPod Touch (Multibit and MyVisionTrack).

Methods: Home-monitoring vision tests included two tests implemented as software applications (apps: MyVisionTrack and MultiBit) on an iPod Touch device. Patients were provided with all hardware required to participate (iPod and MIFI device) and trained to use the apps.
Purpose: The presences of a double layer sign (DLS) and a shallow irregular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) elevation (SIRE) were investigated using spectral domain-OCT (SD-OCT) imaging to determine their ability to predict progression to exudative macular neovascularization (eMNV) in the unaffected fellow eyes (study eye) of participants with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with newly diagnosed unilateral eMNV.
Design: Retrospective, reanalysis of SD-OCT scans of study eyes from the Early Detection of Neovascular AMD (EDNA) study with 3 years follow-up (FU).
Participants: The EDNA study repository of SD-OCT scans was assessed for inclusion.
Aims/hypothesis: To determine the extent to which diabetic retinopathy severity stage may be classified using machine learning (ML) and commonly used clinical measures of visual function together with age and sex.
Methods: We measured the visual function of 1901 eyes from 1032 participants in the Northern Ireland Sensory Ageing Study, deriving 12 variables from nine visual function tests. Missing values were imputed using chained equations.
The word "elective" refers to medications and procedures undertaken by choice or with a lower grade of prioritization. Patients usually use elective medications or undergo elective procedures to treat pathologic conditions or for cosmetic enhancement, impacting their lifestyle positively and, thus, improving their quality of life. However, those interventions can affect the homeostasis of the tear film and ocular surface.

An Evidence Quality Subcommittee was established to provide specialized methodological support and expertise to promote rigorous and evidence-based approaches for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) Lifestyle Epidemic reports. The present report describes the purpose, scope, and activity of the Evidence Quality Subcommittee in the undertaking of high-quality narrative-style literature reviews, and leading prospectively registered, reliable systematic reviews of high priority research questions, using standardized methods for each topic area report.

Its aim is to explore the social, behavioural, economic and biological factors of ageing and how these factors change as people age. The study has been designed to maximize comparability with other international studies of ageing thereby facilitating cross-country comparisons.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is the most serious complication of DR and can lead to total (central and peripheral) visual loss. PDR is characterised by the presence of abnormal new blood vessels, so-called "new vessels," at the optic disc (NVD) or elsewhere in the retina (NVE).

Design: Cross-sectional study.
Participants: Participants from the Northern Ireland Sensory Ageing study (Queen's University Belfast).
Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a chronic, progressive condition and the commonest cause of visual disability in older adults. This study formed part of a diagnostic test accuracy study to quantify the ability of three index home monitoring (HM) tests (one paper-based and two digital tests) to identify reactivation in nAMD. The aim of this qualitative research was to investigate patients' or participants' views about acceptability and explore adherence to weekly HM.

Study Design: Population-based longitudinal cohort study.
Methods: Retinal imaging at the Norther Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Aging Study health assessment included stereo Colour Fundus Photography (CFP) (Canon CX-1, Tokyo, Japan) and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) ((Heidelberg Retinal Angopgraph (HRA)+OCT; Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany).
Concerns have been expressed about the relationship between reduced levels of health care utilisation and the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to elicit and explore the views of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and their ophthalmic care. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with thirty-five patients with nAMD taking part in a larger diagnostic accuracy study of home-monitoring tests.

Previous studies reported associations between retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) and diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess associations between RMPs and diabetes in a cross-sectional analysis of older persons from the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA).

Design: Cross-sectional study with population-based sampling.
Participants: Four hundred forty-one eyes from 296 individuals: 328 control eyes (no diabetes mellitus [DM] and no DR), 55 eyes with DM and no DR, and 58 eyes with early nonproliferative DR.
Purpose: To provide structural and functional evidence of inner retinal loss in diabetes prior to vascular changes and interpret the structure-function relationship in the context of an established neural model.
Methods: Data from one eye of 505 participants (134 with diabetes and no clinically evident vascular alterations of the retina) were included in this analysis. The data were collected as part of a large population-based study.
Purpose: To test the effect of different dark adaptation conditions and reliability indices on the variability of two color scotopic microperimetry.
Methods: We analyzed data from 22 consecutive visually healthy adults. Scotopic microperimetry was performed (Macular Integrity Assessment microperimeter, CenterVue, Padua, Italy) with two wavelength stimuli, cyan (505 nm) and red (627 nm), after a dark adaptation time of 10, 20, or 30 minutes.
Purpose: To investigate the structure-function relationship in eyes with drusen with mesopic and scotopic microperimetry.
Methods: We analyzed structural and functional data from 43 eyes with drusen. Functional data were acquired with mesopic and scotopic two-color (red and cyan) microperimetry.
