Background: The diagnosis of Scleroderma En Coup de Sabre (ECDS)/Parry Romberg Syndrome (PRS) is mainly based on characteristic clinical findings. Methods to objectively monitor the course of the disease in a standardized way are lacking.

Objectives: This descriptive, retrospective, single centre cohort study aims to describe the contribution of 3D photographs in the assessment of the degree of facial asymmetry changes over time in growing children and adolescents with ECDS and PRS.

The study aimed at developing a deep-learning (DL)-based algorithm to predict the virtual soft tissue profile after mandibular advancement surgery, and to compare its accuracy with the mass tensor model (MTM). Subjects who underwent mandibular advancement surgery were enrolled and divided into a training group and a test group. The DL model was trained using 3D photographs and CBCT data based on surgically achieved mandibular displacements (training group).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses whether low preoperative quality of life (QoL) scores, using the EuroQoL metrics EQ-5D and EQ-VAS, can predict mortality rates after elective heart surgery.
  • A total of 2501 patients were evaluated, with hospital and 30-day mortality rates being 1.0% and 1.2%, respectively; results indicated some correlation between lower QoL scores and increased mortality.
  • Ultimately, the findings suggest that poor QoL scores alone aren't reliable indicators for determining which patients should proceed with cardiac surgery.
