Rhinophyma, the advanced stage of rosacea, is a lesion characterized by progressive hypertrophy and hyperplasia of sebaceous glandular tissue, connective tissue, and blood vessels. Rhinophyma can lead to a significant facial disfigurement and severe emotional distress, but it is not only an aesthetic problem, since rare cases of simultaneous presence of malignant tissue are described in the literature. The case of an 84-year-old farmer affected by basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and diagnosed in the context of rhinophyma is presented.

Objectives: To evaluate whether a relationship exists between season at conception and occurrence of isolated spina bifida (ISB).
Study Design: All fetuses with prenatal diagnosis of ISB were analyzed according to date of conception. We compared the seasonal rates of conception between ISB fetuses and a control group consisting of a cohort of fetuses delivered during the same period from 1992 to 2009.
Conclusion: The results demonstrate the stability of the efficacy over time of the intratympanic prednisolone protocol and they suggest that the spontaneous recovery does not significantly influence the long-term evaluation of intratympanic therapy. A 10-day follow-up after 3 days of intratympanic prednisolone administration can be considered a sufficient period to evaluate the effectiveness of the undertaken therapy.
Objective: To assess the stability of the efficacy over time of intratympanic steroid therapy for patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
Objectives/hypothesis: To investigate the efficacy of an intratympanic steroid as a first-line therapy in patients affected by moderate idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).
Study Design: Prospective, randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
Methods: Fifty patients presenting with moderate idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss involving all frequencies from 250 Hz to 8,000 Hz (a flat audiogram) were enrolled.
Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an aggressive tumor that has a poor prognosis and is resistant to unimodal approaches. Multimodal treatment has provided encouraging results.
Methods: Phase II, open-label study of the combination of chemotherapy (pemetrexed 500 mg/m²+cisplatin 75 mg/m² IV every 21 days × 3 cycles), followed by surgery (en-bloc extrapleural pneumonectomy, 3-8 weeks after chemotherapy) and hemithoracic radiation (total radiation beam 54 Gy, received 4-8 weeks post-surgery).
Unlabelled: Randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of Corpitolinol 60 in the prevention of pressure sores in surgical patients.
Introduction: The risk of pressure sores in surgical patients is widely recognised. The Corpitolinol 60 (Sanyréne®) applied on compressed areas seems to reduce the risk of pressure sores.
Objective: To evaluate the perinatal outcome of twins approaching term in relation to chorionicity and gestational age at delivery.
Study Design: We accessed data pertaining to a cohort of 471 twin pregnancies with certain chorionicity delivered at > 34.0 weeks' gestation.
In 2010, in Veneto Region, Italy, surveillance of summer fevers was conducted to promptly identify autochthonous cases of West Nile fever and increase detection of imported dengue and chikungunya in travelers. Surveillance highlighted the need to modify case definitions, train physicians, and when a case is identified, implement vector control measures.

Platinum-based chemotherapy is often a first-line treatment. Pemetrexed has shown single-agent activity in SCCHN and in combination with cisplatin for other tumors.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to assess for the first time the efficacy of the association of IT steroid and HBO therapy in patients presenting idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), comparing this protocol with another consisting of IV steroid administration and HBO therapy.
Methods: A total of 48 patients presenting ISSNHL were recruited.
In 2005, universal varicella vaccination was introduced in the Veneto region, Italy. We examined trends in varicella incidence and hospitalization rates before and after vaccine introduction, and applied statistical models to assess vaccine effectiveness. Varicella incidence rates for 2000-2008 were calculated from the mandatory regional surveillance data and from a special surveillance system based on reports from a sample of family pediatricians that during the study period followed more than 40,000 children.

Preclinical data suggest that pemetrexed may synergistically interact with gemcitabine by enhancing the expression of human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (hENT1) and deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), increasing the uptake and intracellular activation of gemcitabine. A pharmacogenetic approach was adopted to evaluate hENT1 and dCK expressions in humans and to identify the potential best time interval to administer gemcitabine after pemetrexed in patients with advanced NSCLC.

In both experimental conditions, the AVP response was significantly higher in women with idiopathic hyperprolactinemia than in normal normoprolactinemic women.

Maintenance therapy may consist of an agent that either was or was not present in the induction regimen. The antifolate pemetrexed is efficacious in combination with cisplatin for first-line treatment of advanced NSCLC and has shown efficacy as a maintenance agent in studies in which it was not included in the induction regimen.

In 2005 varicella vaccination was added to the Veneto Region routine immunization schedule for all children at 14 months of age and 12 year-old susceptible adolescents through an active and a free of charge offer. To evaluate parameters at the start of the programme, we conducted a study to describe the epidemiology of varicella infection and coverage rates for varicella vaccine in the Veneto Region (North-East Italy).

Study Design: Cases in which the placental edge overlapped the internal cervical (n = 42) underwent cesarean section delivery. Labor was allowed in those with placental edge to internal os distance of 1-10 mm (group 1, 24 women) and those with a distance of 11-20 mm (group 2, 29 women).
Background: In the attempt to optimize the efficacy of chemotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) several strategies need to be investigated including the use of non-platinum combinations and the sequential use of different agents.
Patients And Methods: In a phase II randomised study 165 patients with stage IIIB or IV NSCLC were assigned to receive docetaxel 40 mg/m(2) days 1 and 8 plus gemcitabine 1200 mg/m(2) days 1 and 8 every 21 days (arm A, N=54) or docetaxel 50 mg/m(2) days 1 and 15 plus gemcitabine 1600 mg/m(2) days 1 and 15 every 28 days (arm B, N=57) or gemcitabine 1200 mg/m(2) days 1 and 8 plus cisplatin 100mg/m(2) day 2 every 21 days for 3 cycles followed by docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) day 1 every 21 days for 3 cycles (arm C, N=54). The primary endpoint of the trial was overall response rate.
Little is known about pharmaceutical and personal care products pollutants (PPCPs), but there is a growing interest in how they might impact the environment and microbial communities. The widespread use of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) has attracted great attention because of the high usage rate, the unpredictable disposal and the unknown potential effects on wildlife and the environment. Until now information regarding the impact of Viagra on microbial community in water environment has not been reported.

Introduction: This randomized phase II trial evaluated single-agent pemetrexed or sequential pemetrexed/gemcitabine in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who were elderly (> or = 70 years) or younger than 70 years and ineligible for platinum-based chemotherapy.
Methods: Chemonaive patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 2 received either 500 mg/m2 of pemetrexed (day 1, every 3 weeks) for eight cycles, or the same dosage of pemetrexed for cycles 1 and 2 and then 1200 mg/m2 of gemcitabine (days 1 and 8, every 3 weeks) for cycles 3 and 4 (repeated once for a total of eight cycles). All patients were given vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation.
