Mesoporous silica are widely utilised as drug carriers due to their large pore volume and surface area, which facilitate effective loading. Additionally, they can be used to enhance drugs stability and protect against enzymatic degradation due to their silica framework. However, without the addition of a capping material, the loaded cargo may be prematurely released before reaching the target site.

Studies with genetically modified mice have implicated the transcriptional regulator STAT3 as a key modulator of bone development. STAT3-OKO knockout mouse lines were generated in two genetic backgrounds, pure C57BL/6 (STAT3-OKO-BL) and mixed C57BL/6, CD1 (STAT3-OKO-M). Both lines exhibited defective postnatal bone development resulting in reduced body weight and shortened femurs that displayed low bone mineral density as well as cortical widening and thinning in the diaphyseal region.

Bereavement during childhood impacts children's wellbeing and biopsychosocial development. Research examining impacts and outcomes of childhood bereavement and supportive interventions has highlighted a myriad of factors that influence children's unique, complex experiences of grief, necessitating a personalized, child-centred approach. Children's grief support is underpinned by well-established grief theories studied primarily in adult populations, and stage-based developmental theories that characterise child development as "normative" and universal.

Introduction: Clinicopathologic and patient factors, such as tumor grade, size, age, and menopausal status, provide limited prognostic and predictive information in hormone receptor positive (HR +), human epidermal growth receptor 2 negative (HER2-), node-negative early-stage breast cancer, leading to potential over- or under-treatment. Multigene expression profile tests used in clinical practice in the USA, including the 21-gene assay, 70-gene assay, 12-gene assay, and 50-gene assay, offer prognostic information beyond traditional clinicopathologic features to improve treatment decisions. This study aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of these four multigene assays compared with clinicopathologic risk assessment alone.

In Brief: There are some unique aspects to providing trauma-informed reproductive care to transgender and nonbinary people, who are affected by minority stress, stigma, and particular forms of trauma; we review the evidence and suggest strategies for the provision of trauma-informed reproductive care to gender minorities.

Abstract: Stigma and minority stress affect the health of transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) people, leading to disparities across a range of outcomes. Barriers to accessing care, including reproductive care, further complicate these health disparities.

Controlled human infection models (CHIMs) are a critical tool for the understanding of infectious disease progression, characterising immune responses to infection and rapid assessment of vaccines or drug treatments. There is increasing interest in using CHIMs for vaccine development and an obvious need for widely available and fit-for-purpose challenge agents. Inno4Vac is a large European consortium working towards accelerating and de-risking the development of new vaccines, including the development of CHIMs for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and Clostridioides difficile.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted at Children's Hospital Los Angeles to examine the impact of home health nursing (HHN) on hospital readmissions in children aged 0-21 who underwent tracheostomy placement between December 2016 and February 2023.
  • Among 130 participants, 57% received HHN after discharge, and the overall 30-day hospital readmission rate was 14.6%.
  • The results indicated that HHN did not affect readmission rates for those on home mechanical ventilation, but it significantly reduced readmissions for kids not using HMV, suggesting HHN can help in the transition from hospital to home care.

  • Regulations use THM4 and HAA5 to measure health risks from disinfection byproducts (DBPs), assuming these metrics reflect toxicity levels.
  • A study found that while increasing chlorine contact time raised THM4 and HAA5 levels, it actually decreased overall cytotoxicity, suggesting these metrics may mislead regulatory focus.
  • Alternative methods, like granular activated carbon followed by chlorine, were shown to significantly reduce cytotoxicity, indicating the need for better toxicity-correlating metrics to enhance consumer safety in water distribution systems.
