A Pilot Clinical and Technical Validation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Platform for 3D Anatomical Modeling and Contouring in Support of Surgical and Radiation Oncology Treatment Planning.

The aim of this study was to validate a novel medical virtual reality (VR) platform used for medical image segmentation and contouring in radiation oncology and 3D anatomical modeling and simulation for planning medical interventions, including surgery. The first step of the validation was to verify quantitatively and qualitatively that the VR platform can produce substantially equivalent 3D anatomical models, image contours, and measurements to those generated with existing commercial platforms. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural antioxidant dithiol compound, exerting antiproliferative and antimetastatic effects in various cancer cell lines. Background: In 2012, the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) embarked on structured competency-based curricula (CBC) for its programmes. Other health profession training institutions continued with their traditional way of teaching and thus causing variability in the competencies of the graduates. We aimed to analyze the experiences of different stakeholders on the implementation of CBC specifically on biomedical sciences by MUHAS to inform the development of harmonized competency-based curricula in three health professional training institutions in Tanzania.

Although laparoscopy has classically been defined as the gold standard for diagnosis of endometriosis, there is now a strong recommendation for the use of advanced imaging in diagnosing the disease. In addition to playing a crucial role in the diagnosis of endometriosis, advanced imaging is also essential for assisting gynaecologic surgeons in planning the surgical management of complex cases of deep endometriosis. Positron emission tomography with x-ray computed tomography (PET/CT) is increasingly being utilized for radiation treatment planning (RTP). Accurate delivery of RT therefore depends on quality PET/CT data. This study covers quality control (QC) procedures required for PET/CT for diagnostic imaging and incremental QC required for RTP.

Forensic exhumation and human remains identification: A gap between the Inquest Act 1980 and medico legal education in Tanzania.

This article discusses the gap between the Inquest Legislation of Tanzania and the medical practitioner's teaching curriculum which also covers the medico-legal field. The Tanzanian law clearly states that 'any Government medical practitioner' may be given the responsibility of exhumation, provision of post mortem order and then examination of the corpse where there are ample circumstances requiring an inquest to assist police investigation and the Judiciary in determining whether the cause of death was natural. However, the medical training curriculum in Tanzania for many years did not offer any courses of forensic exhumation and identification of human skeletal remains.

Ischemic Preconditioning Modulates the Peripheral Innate Immune System to Promote Anti-Inflammatory and Protective Responses in Mice Subjected to Focal Cerebral Ischemia.

The development of tolerance triggered by a sublethal ischemic episode (preconditioning, PC) involves a complex crosstalk between neurons, astrocytes and microglia, although the role of the peripheral immune system in this context is largely unexplored. Here, we report that severe cerebral ischemia caused by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) in adult male mice elevates blood counts of inflammatory neutrophils and monocytes, and plasma levels of miRNA-329-5p. These inflammatory responses are prevented by ischemic PC induced by 15 min MCAo, 72h before the severe insult (1h MCAo).

Monitoring Respiratory Motion during VMAT Treatment Delivery Using Ultra-Wideband Radar.

The goal of this paper is to evaluate the potential of a low-cost, ultra-wideband radar system for detecting and monitoring respiratory motion during radiation therapy treatment delivery. Radar signals from breathing motion patterns simulated using a respiratory motion phantom were captured during volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) delivery. Gantry motion causes strong interference affecting the quality of the extracted respiration motion signal.

Antarctica represents a unique natural laboratory for ecotoxicological studies as it is characterized by low internal pollutants emissions but high external contamination levels.
