Triple arthrodesis is commonly used to correct complex deformity with hindfoot valgus. The authors use an isolated medial incisional approach for subtalar and talonavicular joint arthrodesis to correct hindfoot deformity, including high degrees of hindfoot valgus. Supramalleolar osteotomy for posttraumatic malunion, developmental or physeal deformities, congenital malalignment, or focal articular degenerative problems in the ankle is a useful surgical technique. Accurate evaluation of the distal tibial deformity, weight-bearing radiographs, and soft tissue examination for contractures and instability ensure proper decision making. Osteotomy planning must involve all components of the deformity, including the foot, and respect osteotomy principles.

Unlabelled: A review was conducted of 23 patients who underwent implantation of mesenchymal stem cell allograft for revision foot or ankle surgery. Surgical treatment of talus fractures can challenge even the most skilled foot and ankle surgeon. Complicated fracture patterns combined with joint dislocation of variable degrees require accurate assessment, sound understanding of principles of fracture care, and broad command of internal fixation techniques needed for successful surgical care. Elimination of unnecessary soft tissue dissection, a low threshold for surgical reduction, liberal use of malleolar osteotomy to expose body fracture, and detailed attention to fracture reduction and joint alignment are critical to the success of treatment.

To identify complications that necessitated revision surgery after the primary operation, a multicenter retrospective chart review was conducted for 646 patients who received either a modified chevron-Austin osteotomy (270 patients), modified Lapidus arthrodesis (342 patients), or closing base wedge osteotomy (34 patients) to correct hallux valgus deformity. Unlabelled: Talocalcaneal middle facet coalitions are associated with rigid pes planovalgus that often requires surgical intervention. Simple resection of the coalition is preferred for symptomatic cases in the absence of rearfoot arthritis. While resection of the coalition will remove the osseous restriction of motion and may eliminate pain, the procedure does not specifically correct the concomitant pes planovalgus.

To assess geographic distributions of elements in the Arctic we compared essential and non-essential elements in the livers of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) collected from five regions within Canada in 2002, in Alaska between 1994 and 1999 and from the northwest and east coasts of Greenland between 1988 and 2000. As, Hg, Pb and Se varied with age, and Co and Zn with gender, which limited spatial comparisons across all populations to Cd, which was highest in Greenland bears. Collectively, geographic relationships appeared similar to past studies with little change in concentration over time in Canada and Greenland for most elements; Hg and Se were higher in some Canadian populations in 2002 as compared to 1982 and 1984.
