Objective: To compare skin surface pH and moisture in intertriginous areas in diabetic patients and healthy control subjects and to study the relationship between these parameters and candidal infection.

Research Design And Methods: We measured the skin surface pH and moisture in the axillary, inframammary, inguinal, and forearm skin with a pH meter with a flat-glass electrode and skin corneometer. The subjects were 50 NIDDM patients from the diabetic outpatient clinic at Beilinson Medical Center, Petah Tiqva, Israel, and 40 healthy control subjects from hospital personnel.

We hereby present a patient with Cushing's disease who became pregnant while being treated with o,p'-DDD and underwent a therapeutic abortion in view of the known embryotoxicity and placental transfer of this drug. Biopsy of adipose tissue in this patient showed it to be the storage site of considerable quantities of o,p'-DDD. Serum levels of o,p'-DDD determined in this patient initially four months after withdrawal of treatment and in another similar case three months after withdrawal were about 20 times higher than those found in untreated patients and reached control values only about 20 months later.

Two patients suffering from benign and one patient suffering from malignant insulinoma experienced frequent incapacitating hypoglycemic attacks which did not respond to treatment with streptozotocin, diazoxide and/or diphenylhydantoin. Dl-propranolol, in dosages ranging from 30-240 mg/day, successfully abolished the symptoms of hypoglycemia, prevented recurrent hypoglycemic attacks, and normalized blood glucose levels concomitant with a reduction in pulse rate to 60/min. The main mechanism of the drug's effect seems to be the suppression of insulin release.

Marked improvement in the severe hypertension (250/150 mmHg) and hirsutism of a patient suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome was quickly achieved by the use of spironolactone 200 mg per day. Substitution of spironolactone with bromocriptine induced further amelioration of these symptoms and renewal of ovulatory cycles. These drugs may afford another mode of therapy in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.
