Calcinosis cutis, characterized by the pathological deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin, is associated with several disease entities, particularly autoimmune conditions such as scleroderma and dermatomyositis. Lesions of calcinosis are often painful, prone to ulceration, and significantly impair quality of life. Despite the clinical impact, no effective treatments have been established to date, making prevention of this condition a critical priority.

P2-type NaNiMnO (NNMO) as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) largely suffers from continuous accumulation of local stress caused by destructive structural evolution and irreversible oxygen loss upon cycling, leading to rapid capacity degradation. Herein, a strategy of negative enthalpy doping (NED), wherein transition metal (TM) sites are substituted with 0.01 mol each Sn, Sb, Cu, Ti, Mg, and Zn to increase the stability of the TM layers, is proposed.

This study explores the mechanisms responsible for the bandwidth reduction observed in germanium photodetectors under high signal light power. We investigate the impact of the carrier-shielding effect on the bandwidth through simulations, and we mitigate this effect by increasing the applied bias voltage. The increase in the concentration of photogenerated carriers leads to a reduction in the carrier saturation drift velocity, which reduces the bandwidth of the germanium photodetector; this phenomenon is studied for the first time.

The primary extraction way for unconventional oil/gas resources is hydraulic fracturing to alter the reservoir for commercial production. However, hydraulic fracturing technology consumes a large amount of water, and the flowback water can easily be mixed with hydrocarbon substances to form emulsions. To achieve the recycling of water, it is necessary to develop an efficient continuous demulsification method for treating the flowback fluid.

Terahertz (THz) waves, a novel type of radiation with quantum and electronic properties, have attracted increasing attention for their effects on the nervous system. Spatial working memory, a critical component of higher cognitive function, is coordinated by brain regions such as the infralimbic cortex (IL) region of the medial prefrontal cortex and the ventral cornu ammonis 1 (vCA1) of hippocampus. However, the regulatory effects of THz waves on spatial working memory and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

This review focuses on the anatomic and radiographic characteristics of the pediatric proximal femur and the advantages and disadvantages of different protocols for the management of pediatric femoral neck fractures (PFNFs) in terms of fracture classification, reduction methods, reduction quality and fixation methods, with the goal of proposing an optimal treatment protocol for PFNFs to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications. The anatomic and radiographic characteristics of the pediatric proximal femur, including the presence of an active growth plate, an immature femoral calcar, greater trabecular density and plasticity and a relatively immature blood supply are very different from those of the adult proximal femur. Treatment protocols for PFNFs must differ from those for adult femoral neck fractures.

Chronic exposure to arsenic (As), a ubiquitous contaminant, poses deleterious health risks to humans, including cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have implicated ferroptosis, in which the essential micronutrient selenium (Se) plays a crucial role, in several As-induced pathological processes. However, whether Se can counteract As-induced endothelial dysfunction through ferroptosis remains unclear.

Wound-infected bacterial biofilms are protected by self-secreted extracellular polymer substances (EPS), which can confer them with formidable resistance to the host's immune responses and antibiotics, and thus delays in diagnosis and treatment can cause stubborn infections and life-threatening complications. However, tailoring an integrated theranostic platform with the capability to promptly diagnose and treat wound biofilm infection still remains a challenge. Herein, a versatile erbium-doped carbon dot-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Er:CDs@ZIF-8) nanoheterojunction (C@Z nano-HJ) is tailored and incorporated into gelatin methacrylate/poly(-hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (GelMA/PHEAA)-based tough and sticky hydrogel dressing (GH-C@Z) to achieve wound biofilm infection-integrated theranostic application.

The specific roles of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), a translation-dependent RNA quality control mechanism that degrades mRNAs containing premature termination codons (PTCs), in mammalian craniofacial development have remained unclear. Here, we show that knockout of the essential NMD factor in mouse craniofacial neural crest cells leads to hypoplastic mandibles, subsequently inducing tongue mispositioning and cleft palate formation. Furthermore, loss triggers massive cell apoptosis and disrupts cell differentiation, accompanied by widespread alterations in alternative splicing and a surge in PTC-containing mRNA levels.
