Article Synopsis
  • - The study developed a CT imaging grading system to assess the severity of upper urinary tract calculi related to kidney infections, using data from 126 patients.
  • - Patients with higher CT grades, particularly those with fever or diabetes, showed significant differences in clinical findings like white blood cell counts and other inflammatory markers.
  • - The research found that a higher CT grade significantly increased the risk of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), with a 4.472 times greater risk for each grade increase.

Background/aims: Autophagy is a cellular degradation process for the recycling of damaged or superfluous intracellular compartments to provide an alternative energy source during periods of metabolic stress for maintaining cell homeostasis and viability. Although autophagy in different contexts have been shown to use similar signaling pathways, the exact molecular regulation of autophagy has been found to be cell-type dependent.

Methods: We used rapamycin to trigger autophagy and used nitric oxide (NO) to inhibit autophagy in prostate cancer cells.
