  • The study assessed the psychometric properties of a newly translated Arabic version of the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire (NDQ-AV) using a sample of 546 Lebanese adolescents.
  • Results showed strong support for both one-factor and two-factor models, grouping nightmare distress into "general distress and coping" and "impact and perception," along with excellent reliability.
  • The findings validate the NDQ-AV for measuring nightmare distress, which is anticipated to enhance understanding of this issue in Lebanon.

Background: Anxiety and depression are psychiatric disorders that often coexist and share some features. Developing a simple and cost-effective tool to assess anxiety and depression in the Arabic-speaking population, predominantly residing in low- and middle-income nations where research can be arduous, would be immensely beneficial. The study aimed to translate the four-item composite Patient Health Questionnaire - 4 (PHQ-4) into Arabic and evaluate its psychometric properties, including internal reliability, sex invariance, composite reliability, and correlation with measures of psychological distress.

Background: The Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI), an insomnia measurement tool based on the updated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria with sound psychometric properties when applied in various populations, was evaluated here among healthcare students longitudinally, to demonstrate its measurement properties and invariance in this particularly high-risk population.

Methods: Healthcare students of a Chinese university were recruited into this two-wave longitudinal study, completing the simplified Chinese version of the SCI (SCI-SC), Chinese Regularity, Satisfaction, Alertness, Timing, Efficiency, Duration (RU_SATED-C) scale, Chinese Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4-C), and sociodemographic variables questionnaire (Q-SV) between September and November 2022. Structural validity, measurement invariance (MI), convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the SCI-SC were examined.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Chinese version of the PHQ-4, a tool for screening depression and anxiety among medical students, focusing on its reliability and validity over three time points.
  • - The research found that a two-factor model best represented the PHQ-4 results, demonstrating strong longitudinal measurement invariance (LMI) and acceptable construct validity when compared to other health questionnaires.
  • - The findings support the use of the PHQ-4 in Chinese healthcare student populations, providing evidence of its effectiveness for routine screening of mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the measurement properties of the Chinese version of the Brief Inventory of Perceived Stress (BIPS-C) and find effective ways to measure perceived stress.
  • A sample of 1356 community residents was divided into two groups: one for exploratory analysis to identify underlying constructs and the other to confirm those constructs through analysis.
  • Results indicated that the best-fitting model for the BIPS-C was a bifactor model, indicating one general factor of perceived stress with specific influences, which showed strong internal consistency and reliability.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates e-cigarette use among college students in Hangzhou, identifying factors influencing their intention to use these products.
  • A sample of 775 students revealed that 16.5% had tried e-cigarettes, with significant factors like gender, economic status, and social circles affecting willingness to use.
  • The findings suggest that personal and environmental influences play a key role in e-cigarette usage intentions, highlighting the need for increased tobacco education to mitigate vaping rates.

Background: Sleep quality can offer new insights into addressing depression among stroke patients. However, the current understanding of the mechanism by which sleep quality reduces depression is not clear in existing research.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify the relationships and mechanisms among perceived stress, sleep quality, social support, and depression in stroke patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the sleep quality of healthcare students in China and its relationships with mental health and self-rated health.
  • Researchers assessed the Sleep Quality Questionnaire (SQQ) through longitudinal analysis involving 595 healthcare students, examining its structural validity, construct validity, and reliability.
  • Findings indicate that the SQQ-9 effectively measures sleep quality and shows significant differences based on various sociodemographic factors; anxiety, depression, and self-rated health notably predict sleep quality outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A survey involving 348 Chinese healthcare students used specific questionnaires to measure sleep quality, well-being, and mental health, revealing notable correlations among these factors.
  • * Results indicated that poor sleep quality negatively impacts students' well-being, with anxiety and depression fully mediating this relationship, suggesting that improving sleep could enhance overall well-being by reducing mental health issues.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the measurement properties of the Chinese version of the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5-C) among 343 healthcare students, focusing on its structural validity, measurement invariance, reliability, and optimal cutoff point.
  • - Results indicated that the WHO-5-C showed strong structural validity and internal consistency, with good test-retest reliability and satisfactory convergent validity compared to other health questionnaires.
  • - The optimal cutoff score for the WHO-5-C was determined to be 50, demonstrating a high level of accuracy (area under the ROC curve = 0.882), indicating it can effectively assess subjective well-being in this population.

Objective: To evaluate the associations between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), with a focus on gender differences, and variations among women pre-and post-menopausal stages.

Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Setting: A large community-based survey was conducted every two years from 2010 to 2018 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Southeastern China.

Background: The 10-item Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) is a widely used tool for individuals to self-report their self-esteem; however, the factorial structures of translated versions of the RSES vary across different languages. This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the RSES in the Chinese mainland using a longitudinal design.

Methods: A group of healthcare university students completed the RSES across three waves: baseline, 1-week follow-up, and 15-week follow-up.

Objective: The study aimed to initially assess the measurement properties of the 10-item simplified Chinese version of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-C-10) and as a first, assess a longitudinal measurement invariance (LMI).

Methods: A longitudinal survey was conducted with a convenient sample of healthcare students using the PSS-C-10. We assessed the PSS-C-10 mainly using composite analytical approaches, including exploratory graph analysis (EGA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to suggest the best-fit factor structure and assess measurement invariance.

The association between the prevalence of breast and cervical cancer in Chinese women and air pollution is obscure. The study aims to analyze the correlation between air pollution and the prevalence of breast and cervical cancer, and whether the gross domestic product (GDP) has a modifying effect on the impact of air pollution on the prevalence of breast and cervical cancer. Extracting panel data from 31 provinces and cities between 2006 and 2020, we evaluated the association between breast and cervical cancer prevalence and pollutant emissions from 2006 to 2015 with two-way fixed-effect models.

Background: There is a growing attention on intuitive eating (IE) styles in the Western world that has not yet reached Arab countries, which is likely due to the lack of psychometrically sound measures of the IE construct for Arabic-speaking people. The current study aims to examine the psychometric properties of an Arabic translation of the most widely used measure of IE-the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2), in an Arabic-speaking community population from Lebanon.

Methods: Two samples of Arabic-speaking community adults from Lebanon (sample 1: n = 359, 59.
